Finding clay again- a romance tale
Clay was my college sweetheart. I met it in 1979 while getting a degree in painting and drawing at LSU. I fell hard for it and we had an amazing semester. We went through mixing, wedging, throwing and firing together. I ended up with a special teapot that I would brew tea in for the next 15 years, a precious memory of that college romance!
Fast forward through the years and clay waltzed back into my life through a community course. It was magic again and my hands remembered how and where and why. I have now been working in clay for the past 20 years. There is still a joy in making something that will become a part of someone's life or daily ritual.
I love creating texture, so clay is the perfect medium to impress, carve, stamp and draw on. Inspiration from nature comes through in the images of leaves, flowers, fish and birds that I imbed in my work. Color is also important to me, so I mix my own glazes and constantly experiment to find the perfect combination of transparent, overlapping colors.
I expect to grow old with clay. I want to be able to make pieces for the children's children of the people who first bought my work. And that teapot from 1979--I still have it.
