About

My Creative Process

I live in Pokeno, New Zealand with my very patient and understanding husband, and three beautiful children. I have a post graduate diploma in Health Science and currently work as a registered nurse.

When I'm not being a mum, wife or nurse, I love playing with hot glass. Lampwork is an age old process used to create small glass art such as beads. Murano Italy is the home of lampwork where historically, glass was melted over an oil lamp (hence the name) to create miniature works of glass art. Today with modern technology the same techniques apply, but a propane/oxygen gas torch is used in most cases.

The design and color possibilities are endless, and there is so much experimenting to do. I use soft glass (soda lime) to create my lampwork glass beads. Because each bead is completely made by hand, each is unique and no two will ever be exactly the same. When a glass bead is complete, it will go straight into a digitally controlled kiln for several hours to anneal. Annealing is the process of heat soaking and controlled cooling to remove stresses in the glass that are formed during heating and cooling. Annealing strengthens the bead and reduces spontaneous cracking. You can be assured that your bead/s will last a lifetime (with a little care of course).

When the lampworking muse fails, I head for my stash of beads and findings and get creative with jewellery. My jewellery designs are eclectic and incorporate a variety of materials and techniques. All these creations are made in my little garage studio.

My love for jewellery design started many years ago with simple little seed bead necklaces. It grew to a love of melting glass and I learned to make lampwork glass beads and built a studio in my home to feed this passion.
