It's made with high quality materials and solid construction. Plus, it's so cute- it makes me smile every time I look at it.

About

Life is Hard. We make Soft Things

Kismet
kis·met noun, often capitalized \ˈkiz-ˌmet, -mət\
: a power that is believed to control what happens in the future

Sometimes the wheels of fate turn so slowly that it hardly seems to move. There are even times that the wheel seems to have fallen off it’s axle and careening downhill to a fiery crash.

A few years ago, a trio of Great-Horned Owl fledglings set up shop in my yard. It was one of the most exhilarating and long-term experiences I've ever had with animals. For about three months, I sat outside watching the owls while reading books all day long. They spent their days cuddled near each other watching me. The next year, I hoped that we would have more, but we only heard them hooting in the night.

Being a reader and animal lover, that Spring really stuck with me. Too bad that other things in my life weren't sticking.

When I answered a Craigslist listing for “Roommate Needed” and walked into Holly’s door. I was going through a really tough time and yet, there was a spark when we met. We had nothing in common and lots of things at common at the same time. It also helped that she had a sewing machine set up on the dining room table. She was just learning to quilt and while I hadn't used my sewing machine in years and wasn't into the long hours spent quilting, I was thrilled.

In a matter of days we found ourselves inspiring and bouncing ideas with each other. It was like Kismet, we were meant to meet up at that point in both of our lives and support each other via our differing creatives skills and styles.

Here was the road-map of my “light bulb” moment.
I love books.
I love owls.
I set aside every other craft that I liked to do and decided to focus on just sewing.
I was diagnosed with a condition that really made an at home job more plausible.

As I unpacked my books after moving in, I realized that all of my bookends were made from heavy stone, gems, and wood. Who said that bookends had to be so heavy...almost lethal weapons? That was when I decided to draft my own soft owl bookend pattern and eventually, The Bookish Owl was created.

Now, Holly wasn't sitting here idle in front of her machine, no, not at all. She was busy taking a quilting class and it seemed that everyone she knew was having a baby. The baby quilts and toys were cranking out right and left.

It just made sense for us to team up. We both have slightly different styles and it often shows in our color choices, I’d consider myself Eclectic and call her Bohemian, both are based on the idea of freedom and the absence of limits, which is inspiring right there on it’s own.

We’re excited to take this journey together and I hope that you will join us as we go. It feels like what we are meant to do right now; like Kismet.

Our mission statement is simple: Life is hard. We make soft stuff.

Life is extremely hard; there's break-ups, layoffs, big choices and big decisions, not to mention health issues. I like to make soft things that make people smile.

Howdy, BookishOwl is all about reading accessories and up-cycling found materials in order turn items into things that feed our need to read and to celebrate owls. Some items are specifically meant for bookish needs, ie. bookends, and others, like plushies, are safe for small children without heavy weights or items that could be, OMG, swallowed.

All of the items are handmade from patterns that I created myself through careful trial and error. My goal in using recycled materials is to lower our overall footprint on the world and to help worthy charities in my area, like The Achievement House that encourages and supports those with disabilities in order to achieve their own goals.

We accept payments through Etsy or Paypal.

Please make an effort to pay immediately, or contact me if you're having a problem with PayPal. If you place an order without payment, I have to pay Etsy fees for something that didn't sell.

I'll do everything we can, but if payment hasn't gone through in 3 days, I reserve the right to cancel your order. Of course, if you've contacted me we will be happy to work with you.
Shipping
U.S. only at this point, but that will change. We use the address on Paypal if you use that form of payment, so make sure that is correct. Shipments will go out the next business day. We use Priority Mail which takes 3 to 4 days unless the items just don't justify the cost and then we will use First Class.

Also, we will refund the difference if shipping is cheaper than stated.
Additional policies and FAQs
We would be thrilled to turn your treasured cloth item into an owl of your choice, feel free to convo us with the details. We have made many bookends out of crib quilts or other special baby items that were slipped in care packages to outgoing college students, for example.
