About

Welcome!

Have you ever sharpened a pencil and, as the aroma swiftly rises to your nostrils, had an instant recollection of your high school years? Does the subtle smell of roses remind you of your wedding? When you smell a fragrant tulip, do you yearn to re-live your European trip? Does it remind you of the very first time you witnessed a sea of flowers in gorgeous Netherland?

The fact of the matter is that aromas and memories are deeply intertwined in a unidirectional relationship. It is almost impossible to remember a smell, but a smell can lift your spirit and awaken a plethora of wonderful memories and vivid visions.

Our mission at Books On Candles is to tie the evocative power of fragrances to your love of literature. When we read, most of us have the capacity to envision settings and circumstances, but the one thing we cannot do is smell: we cannot smell the balcony flowers where Romeo compares Juliet to the rising sun, we cannot smell the dewy green garden where Darcy and Elizabeth exchanged their fateful letter, and we certainly cannot smell the decadence of a Roaring Twenties glittering hall. Until now.

Through our candles, we’d like to bring an extra dimension to your passion for literature, while filling your home with soothing, healthy aromas. We know the road is arduous, but “nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”.

Care instructions

Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed.
Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.
Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn.
Don’t burn a candle all the way down — put it out before it gets too close to the holder or container.
Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.
Wicks should be trimmed after every 3-4 hours of burning.
Avoid trimming your wicks too short; this will cause ineffective burning conditions.
Candles should be left to burn until a complete melt pool has formed across the top of the container (approx 2-3 hours). Allow your candle to liquefy to the edge before extinguishing; this will help to prevent ‘tunneling’ of the candle.

Why are all candles white?

We love color; but rather than choosing one, we decided from the beginning to choose them all. White is, after all, the combination of all colors in the spectrum. Symbolically, white is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity; it has an infinitely positive connotation that pervades art and literature. Colors abound and each one is beautiful in its own right, but we’ve chosen to focus in what matters most—the fragrance and the poetry of the literary moment we are attempting to capture for you.

What kind of wax do you use on your candles?

♦♦♦ Soy Wax ♦♦♦
One of the greatest advantages of our soy candles is that they do not contain toxins, carcinogens or pollutants which means it's less likely to trigger allergies. No petrol-carbon soot like you get from petroleum-based paraffin candles and no CO2 released to the atmosphere. Furthermore, soy wax burns cooler which means that you can enjoy your soy wax candle for generally 30-50% longer than a paraffin candle. Since our candles are made out of soybeans, they are naturally biodegradable which makes accidental spills easier to clean (water soluble).

Tell me more about the wicks used in your candles.

Our candle wicks consist of flat cotton braided with paper strands, giving it a rigid structure without the need of a supporting core. The wicks are coated with vegetable wax, making them “all natural wicks”.
The paper material in our wicks provide a controlled curling which produces much less soot and smoke compared to paper cored wicks.
