About

Art Is Important

My name is Laura Bracken and the name of my shop is Bracken Designs, a place to find handcrafted jewelry and tutorials.

My jewelry aesthetic embraces minimalism, clean lines and organic forms. My teaching philosophies are clearly linked with my personal belief that fun and happiness are key components to a fulfilled life. Teaching others to take their spark of creativity to fruition is a joy to me as I watch students create pieces that help identify their individual expression. Other than safety issues, there is never a “right” or “wrong”. I believe art has indefinable lines and that experimentation and playing “outside the box” can elicit new worlds of wonder.

Rather than focusing on one niche or skill, I embrace the idea of learning as many jewelry making techniques as possible in order to fabricate pieces with a wider range of design vision. Making jewelry is usually about saying something specific, whether sentimental, conceptual, or even whimsical. My job is to translate my vision and voice by incorporating combinations of jewelry-making skills including metalsmithing, bead stringing, wire wrapping, etching, metal clay and more. As a staunch supporter of inclusion rather than exclusion, I embrace the melding of all forms of jewelry making.

Although primarily self-taught, I have studied under metal clay artist and pioneer, Hadar Jacobson. I am an accredited teacher of Hadar’s metal clay products and practices. I am also a certified PMC (precious metal clay) instructor.

In 2005, I started the international grassroots organization SRAJD (Self-Representing Artists in Jewelry Design). This word-of-mouth organization has 4000 members with active participation by jewelry makers seeking to learn from and help one another, as well as to raise customer awareness to the benefits of buying directly from the artist. http://www.SRAJD.com

Almost every component to my jewelry is hand-fabricated by me . Individual pieces of jewelry made by one person's hand are not only higher quality, but also have stories to tell that can't be expressed in mass production pieces.

Frequently asked questions

How do I care for my jewelry?

Do not bend any metal components back and forth repeatedly; they will eventually crack.

Metal may darken or dull over time. To restore shine, use a specially treated cloth like a “Sunshine cloth” (a sample is included with most orders). Don’t use silver “dips” or other similar metal cleaners as these etch away the metal, which increases tarnish.

Most metal pieces suffer little damage with brief exposure to tap water (showers, etc), but saltwater (the ocean), bleach, and pool chemicals can be harsh to metal so remove jewelry before pool or ocean water exposure and before using bleach. Avoid water near Mood stones (the acrylic color-changing stones).

Do you accept returns?

Yes. If you are not happy with your purchase, you will receive a full refund once the item is returned to me in the same condition in which it was sent. The piece must be returned within two weeks of customer having received it.

Do you gift wrap?

Each jewelry piece arrives in a gift box. Upon request I can also mail jewelry to gift recipients, adding a notecard from the buyer.

Do you ship international?

Yes. But please familiarize yourself with your country’s import duties and/or tax fees as the buyer is responsible for these. I report the full purchase price on the customs form when I ship.

And contrary to any wording Etsy puts on my listings about the VAT being included in the purchase price, this is not true. There is no VAT charged to you at the time of sale.

VAT and import fees are solely the customer's responsibility.
