About

Breast Cancer Bead Chains Empower Women, Save Lives

I started designing these Breast Cancer Bead chains during chemotherapy, because I worried that other women may suffer the same fate I did, simply from lack of critical health information. Do you know if you have Dense Breast Tissue? If you get regular mammograms, your radiologist and your physician know your density, but have they explained what it means? Unfortunately, up to 50% of us have dense breasts which puts us at 4-6 times higher risk for breast cancer, even with no family history. For me, this information came too late. My dense tissue hid the cancer on a mammogram for almost 7 years. The "normal" reports over the years gave me a false sense of security and belied a growing tumor that became invasive and eventually involved the lymphnodes. The solution to earlier dectection? There are 3: Thermogram, Ultrasound or MRI are all able to see through dense tissue where mammograms cannot.

The lesson of my Breast Cancer Beads is the vigilence required by us, in partnership with our doctors, to personally detect cancer at the earliest possible stage so we can treat it and live. To explain how easy it is to detect cancer when it is the size of a grain of rice, the first bead on the chain represents the average size cancer as detectable by Thermogram. The next largest bead size is the average tumor size detectable by MRI, then ultrasound, mammogram, Doctor exam, and ending with the largest bead: the average tumor as found by Self exam, which is roughly the size of a grape tomato. We can chose a thermogram, which although not covered by insurance, costs only $150 on average, in addition to our yearly mammograms, or we can request an Ultrasound or MRI. We should know and understand our risks. With this knowledge, we are better advocates of our own health and can ask our physicians to partner with us for the earliest possible detection.

My Bead Artisan is my stepdaughter, Jordan Pitsch. She rallied to my side during the worst of my treatments and showed love and support throughout. She hand crafts these beads in further support of our efforts to educate women and raise funds for cancer research. We use extreme care making the beads, and selecting our chosen charity: Van Andel Institute, whose Breast Cancer Research is unparralleled (www.VAI.org). Every dime of profit goes directly to their lab, with no adminstration fees taken out. This is extremely rare among breast cancer charities.

Our Lampwork Artist is Cara Washington , who is as dear as she is talented. She lovingly hand makes the glass beads which bear the likeness of the Van Andel Institute Angel logo, in its signature color purple. Her work is worth viewing, she has her own ETSY store at http://www.etsy.com/shop/shufflestudio.
