IT'S A BRIGHT HORIZON UP HERE! AND WE'RE SHOUTING IT FROM OUR MOUNTAINTOP! :)

Hi Everybody! My name is Karen Meier; I’m the manager of this little Etsy seed shop, Bright Horizon Seeds! And - I’m the Mom to the loyal crew members pictured in some of the seed descriptions you see here. That's my Steve and Tom, my two youngest, both born with Down syndrome who are now in their 20's. And today, I'm shouting from our little farm on this mountaintop in southern California some really bloomin' good news! Our shop's formerly 2-man crew, "beta-testers Steve and Tom" in our seed shop and the "Up on the Farm" program established this summer here on Mulberry Lane Farm in Somis, California is now open to others in surrounding communities who are also "differently-abled!" Not only have pandemic restrictions eased a bit making this possible, but the paperwork and administrative details required of the Upside of Downs (the nonprofit 501(c)3 organization responsible for creating and financially supporting this agricultural hands-on, hearts-in experiential program) have been plowed through and worked out!

The Upside of Downs' "Up on the Farm" program is now underway! It’s a day program where farm-related activities for the "differently-abled" adults in the community are offered on our 6 acre vegetable and rare and tropical fruit tree farm. Although there is no fee to participate in the day program at the farm, each special farmer must be accompanied by and work/hang out with/be side by side with a responsible adult (job coach, caregiver, parent, etc.).

In providing real-life skill-enhancing opportunities for the participants, the "Up on the Farm" program initiatives include the operation of a small, on-line mail order seed shop - Bright Horizon Seeds and a farm stand at the local Farmers Market. The differently-abled farmers get to participate in any or all aspects of these two initiatives: planting and growing vegetables, weeding/pruning/watering gardens, composting, gleaning/saving seeds, packaging and labeling and mailing seed packets, harvesting and cleaning the fruits and vegetables growing here and readying them for the Farmers Market, and helping man the Saturday farm stand on occasion.

The two-fold mission of the "Up on the Farm" day program operated by the Upside of Downs is:
1. to provide hands-on, hearts-in, life-on-a-farm experiences for special needs adults in the community and
2. to celebrate everyone's God-given gifts while experiencing life on a little farm on a mountainside - celebrating everything from spontaneous hula dance moves while exploring the banana and palm tree groves to bicep-flexing demonstrations while carrying the mango basket up the hill to remembering to mask-up before taking the seed orders into the little post office in town! All share gifts here! All make a difference here! Up on the Farm!

100% of the net proceeds of your seed order goes directly to the UPSIDE OF DOWNS, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to help defray the operating costs associated with the "Up on the Farm" programs keeping them alive and thriving! Believe me when I say, your purchase is greatly appreciated!

Blessings and thanks to you all!
