Snappy Cards to Snappy Co!

Thank you for stopping by my shop. I launched my shop in September 2015, and it is a work in progress. I create original hand drawn and individually colored cards, and bookmarks, reward charts for little ones and am (officially) introducing the Fox Box game, a game of matching pairs of familiar objects. My teenage son, Miles suggested the shop name, based on the name of the greeting cards I have made for decades: the Bruin Snappy Card.

The Bruin Snappy Card was named for the eternally cheerful “snappy” girl who stars on them (a version of the girl in my shop avatar, and, in fact, of me). The cards were personal and each holiday card was a sort of wrap up of my year. Since the chirpiness of the Bruin Snappy girl was a bit much (none of us can be all optimism), I later introduced City Girl, a darker, more cynical character dressed in black, with arms often crossed, to voice the counter opinion on a given card. “This has been the best year ever!” Snappy Girl would say. “Says who?” City Girl would counter.

In my own life I send about 140 Christmas cards every year and hand color each one. Upon receiving my annual card, friends and loved ones tell me “you really ought to sell your cards.” (Like I can quit my day job to sell cards, I think, channeling City Girl.) “I so look forward to getting my Bruin Snappy Card each year!” they say. “It’s my favorite one. I save them all.”

I think the cards resonate with people – and now more than ever – because we see so many perfectly polished and digitized images and text in our world. My cards (for better or worse) seem to scream 'hand made'.

One December, a friend had displayed all of the holiday cards he had received on a wall in his dining room. There was a large doorway separating the dining and living rooms and a friend of his was sitting on the couch in the living room, at the far opposite wall from where the cards hung. He told me “she got up from the couch, and headed for the Christmas cards, crossing both rooms. She went straight for your card and picked it up.”
My card had piqued her curiosity from across two rooms and compelled her to get up and go see what it was. That was one of the finest compliments I have ever received about my cards. It told me that they stand out, and that they are different and unique. And they have appeal to people who don’t even know me. I think both Snappy Girl and City Girl would be proud as hell.

In addition to what’s online (with more to come), I am happy to customize a card for you and your family. I also do birth announcements and invitations.

I have worn many hats in my life (literally and figuratively.) In recent years I have pondered how to steer my life down a more creative path and done more writing, drawing, and painting. I am also a mom, and have lived in San Francisco since 1985.
