Bugged Out is a line of my whimsical bug, fruit, veggie and critter designs hand screen printed on baby and kids clothing, tote bags, notecards and accessories.
The name Bugged Out has a very personal meaning and has to do with my diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis in 1998. That really bugged me out. I formed an MS Walk team and called it “Bugged Out". Every year I designed a new team T-shirt with one of my bugs, and every year so many people commented on my T-shirts and asked where they could buy them! So in 2007 Bugged Out, the company was hatched!
One of our first bug customers, the New York Botanical Garden Shop in the Garden , commissioned me to design kid-friendly fruits and veggies for an exclusive line of products for their "Edible Garden Festivals" in 2009 and 2010. These designs are also now available at Bugged Out.
Over the last few years - the don’t bug me (New York wildlife, so to speak!) collection was added to Bugged Out! The “nighty night” bedbug, the "I (heart) new york" cockroach, the mosquito “stinging New York, New York”, the "doving.....uhhh pigeoning New York" pigeon, the rat munching New York, the "Nuts about NY" squirrel, the "hangin' in gotham city" bat and the “wild about NY” raccoon!
Meet the Bugged Out team: me, Dina, and my husband Gerd! I am a trained architect and worked in the field for almost 20 years, on high-end residential and commercial projects in New York City and internationally. Gerd, a solar engineer from Germany, ended up in the NYC IT world. We are the bugs behind Bugged Out!
I draw my Bugged Out designs in Adobe Illustrator. Well, actually, for the first few bug designs I used my architectural program, AutoCad! Some of my designs are simple and basic while others are much more complex. I always research the real thing to come up with a simplified but still based-on-real-life design. It takes a lot of tweaking until I am satisfied with my design!
All of our products are custom made in small runs from natural and/or recycled materials and are screen printed by hand in our NY studio.
