About

There really is a Buttermilk Cottage...

...It's a 1900 bungalow where I create the items you see in my Etsy shop.

Twenty years ago I started Buttermilk Cottage. I was part owner of a yarn shop at the time. My partners and I were having trouble finding a knitting bag to carry in the shop, so I started making some and selling them there. On a shop visit, one of our yarn reps saw my bags and needle cases and said she'd like to carry them as part of her line. I have been making and selling bags and needle cases since. Many of them were carried in yarn shops along the East coast for many years. I no longer have a wholesale business, but devote my time to my Etsy shop these days. Although my bags are designed and made with the knitter in mind, they are great for travel and any other place you need a tote bag.

My selection of needle cases emphasizes organization and they can be made to coordinate with the bags, making a lovely assortment for all your knitting projects.

"Get organized…you'll have more time for knitting!"

Perhaps you are not a knitter and have no real need for tote bags. That's okay because I AM a knitter and as a result, have lots of wonderful knitwear in my shop too. I specialize in smaller articles these days, hats, scarves, cowels, and mittens. Occasionally you will find a larger project listed too. I love yarn and what you can do with it. My passion for knitting these days is combining lots of different yarns, textures and colors when I knit. You will see this reflected in many of the articles I sell.

Out of this passion grew my own boutique yarn, FUSION, which can also be purchased in my shop. It is a combination of a dozen or more different yarns I cut and hand tie together. When knitted, it creates a unique texture and colorway.

"Accessories for the hand knitter…hand made by a knitter."

Decor is another interest. I use lots of knitted pillows in my home. Last year I began making "Sweater Pillow" covers from up cycled sweaters. I fell in love with the process and the resulting covers. You can find them in my little shop too.

Because I work with wool so much I love sheep and you will find a little "flock" in my shop. Many of these little ornaments are designed and hand knitted by me. But you will also see ones I make from the scraps of the up cycled sweaters used for my pillow covers.

"…boutique bags and beyond."

My Etsy shop is a one woman operation. Everything is made in my small sewing room/office by me. I do all the supply purchasing, product design and production, photography, packing, shipping. I'm usually working at it most days and can truely say,

"I love my job!"

By the way, my best friend and sister, Nancy is also an Etsy shop owner. We share a house, she has the upstairs, I have the downstairs. You can see her creations at:

Update: Effective March 7, 2016, I will be helping in my sister's shop, Nannniepannie, with her shipping. She is moving temporarily, six hours away to help care for our mother, who suffers from dementia. She will continue crafting for her shop, but inventory already created will be shipped by me from the house we shared here in Johnson City, TN.

Shipping
I make every effort to ship the same or next day that a purchase is made. Of course, custom orders take extra time and I'll give you an estimate of shipping date if we are arranging a custom sale. I ship via USPS, using 1st Class, Priority and Parcel Post, depending upon the weight of your shipment. If you are in a rush I will be happy to use an alternate method of shipping at your expense.

International Customers--please be aware that any VAT, custom or duty fees imposed by your country are your responsibility to pay. If you prefer not to pay this fee I will be happy to cancel your order with a full refund if you notify me before the order is shipped.

Posted shipping costs are estimated. At time of shipment, if I find I have overcharged you, anything over $1.00 will be refunded to you.
Refunds and Exchanges
I want you to enjoy your purchase as much as I enjoyed making it. So, if for any reason, you are less than happy, I'll refund your payment, less shipping, once the item is returned to me, in its original condition and within 14 days of you receiving it. Please contact me and we will work it out the details.

Sorry but I cannot refund for digital downloads once you have downloaded the file or for custom items.
Additional policies and FAQs
If you see something you like, but want it in another color, I can probably accommodate you. Custom orders must be paid in full before I start the item. Just remember, custom knitting and sewing can take a couple of weeks.
