Though this item was much smaller than I imagined it would be, I kept it because the detail and the workmanship are second to none. Just beautiful all 'round!

Butternut designs are about the lore of hand knitting, the love of wearing them, with a modern feel.

I started my first knitting venture after having my first child, discovering the babysitter picking up and working on my knitting from the knitting basket. This important event helped me to expand my gift making and giving knitting enterprise. For Butternut, I wanted to capture the sensibility of growing up in the mountains of New Hampshire. The experience of wearing crafty hats and mittens from the church bazaar, the traditions of wool keeping you warm, and simple playful graphics.
A Brooklyn based artist, I design and create all the designs in my studio : dyeing new colors, on the stove, grafting new patterns on paper, making new swatches with wood needles, and hand knitting all original samples. I have a small team of hand knitters that help out in the studio to help finish the final designs.
This group of designs is then sent to Nepal for production. Our Nepal based knitters are of the same family of our Brooklyn based knitters. We have worked together for over 13 years, developing our production capabilities. They buy Australian wool fleece on the local market to spin, dye and knit into an exclusively made and unique finished product.
