Notice: Some wool and Linen Rya backings are backordered from Rauma in Norway. 80 x 120 cm and 80 x 150 cm. I have recently removed about 20 kit listings from my shop that count on these supplies. Check back soon. I will update as soon as the shipment arrives.
Let Byrdcall Studio introduce you--or reintroduce you--to the art of Rya Rug Making. I was born into a rya rug family and now share the Nordic traditions with you along with all the traditional supplies and a recently published book on Rya by me, Melinda Purcell Byrd. This shop and Studio is run solely by myself and I take great pride in sharing my rya knowledge and skills with you.
Check out the kits and a great way to get started. I carry the wool and linen woven backings of Norway and Finland as well as some discount backing made in the USA out of acrylic and linen. I have been working in rya professionally and as a hobby for about 50 years. I started when I was a child. My grandparents, the Lundgrens of Lundgren Rya gave me my first supplies and told me to design my own!
Rya enthusiasts can be happy to have found not only a source for excellent quality rya supplies, but also a wealth of information on rya rug making. To keep informed, please sign up for my monthly newsletter by going to my website, www.byrdcallstudio.com, and sign up.
In 2020 in the midst of the pandemic, I published a book I had been working on for over 8 years. It is RYA RUGS--Design and Make Your Own. Cut-and-paste this link to go to Youtube: https://www.etsy.com/listing/764507084/rya-rugs-design-and-make-your-own-is-for?ref=shop_home_feat_1
I hope you enjoy looking at the wide variety of work I do. If you are wondering why I have such a wide range of arts in my shop, it is because these are all things I am passionate about. Before I jumped into being "the Rya Revitalist" with both feet, I was active as a printmaker and visual art painter. That is why you will also find some of these works in my Etsy shop.
Keep coming back to see new additions.
Cheers and peace,
Melinda

I provide the backings, yarn, needles, graph paper, and some kits. More kits will be listed in the coming year.

FireFlower; Another design drawn on the backing (or ask for it on a graph). Comes in several color choices.

Watch for this listing of ANEMONE from Rauma of Norway. I can get it for you and get you started with translations.

This is one of my recent creations in rya. It is called WaterSwirl. It is now available as a kit.
Going Back to My Roots with Scandinavian Rya Rugs
I was born into a rya rug family. My grandparents, Angie and Bill Lundgren were the sole representatives for the Bergå yarn and rya rug company in Sweden for nearly two decades. I worked as designer and “helper extraordinaire” for Lundgren Rya in the late 1970’s – early 80’s. The rya business was sold out of the family in the mid-80’s, yet I continued to make ryas and teach with my small inventory of yarn and backings after moving to Maryland.
In the winter/spring of 2011, I designed and knotted what I thought would be my last rya rug while the local paper, the Carroll County Times documented in photographs and video the entire process for posterity. It is posted on youtube.com and I invite you all to see it. Here is the link: http://youtu.be/trl3V5Q2kG4. Feel free to share this with anybody you think would enjoy it. The video has been seen by over a quarter million people (Jan. 2016).
I have received so many requests for materials and instructions, I have:
>> Started to write a book on Designing and Making Your Off-Loom Rya. It will be released as a book, then as a pdf file as soon as it is completed. (Spring 2016)
>>Found a Norwegian rya supply producer, two Finnish companies, and a Swedish company which supply rya woven backings and yarn. I now am purchasing supplies from them and making them available to you.
>>I “bought back” my grandparents former business, Lundgren Rya, including a huge amount of yarn, backings, 100s of designs, needles, graph paper, etc. This acquisition took place on October 26, 2013!
I have a unique knowledge and skill in designing and calculating needed materials for making rya rugs. I offer my services to help you find materials and develop your technique. I can help you learn to make your own rya rug, or I can match you with a talented knotter who can make it for you.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a loom or special equipment in order to make a rya rug from Byrdcall Studio?
No, you don't need anything more technical than a good pair of scissors. The kit comes with the design, a card with all of the color combinations prepared for you, instructions in English, needles, and some kits come with a ruler tool for wrapping the rya loop around to make the loops consistent. If you happen to have a loom, you could make your own rya with rya yarns that I sell, but 99% of my customers do not weave.
Do you give a price break for people who have already made several rya rugs?
Yes, if you have plenty of #13 tapestry needles and the ruler stick that is part of all the Rauma kits from Norway, send me a conversation telling me so before you order a kit, and I will list the kit you want with a $10 deduction and not send you more needles nor the ruler.
