Byrdcall Studio is the only all-Rya-supply shop in the USA with Nordic yarn and backings. In my past life as a visual artist, I created many works of art. Most are still shared here in my Etsy shop. Enjoy the browse. Feel free to ask questions.
Have fun looking. I am the sole artist and owner of Byrdcall Studio. As Interest in rya grows, I am increasing my offerings here so there is something for all levels: Basic kits, Backings in various sizes and fiber contents, and all the best available rya yarn I can find from Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the USA. I also have been working in rya professionally and as a hobby for about 50 years. ( I started when I was a child. My grandparents, the Lundgrens of Lundgren Rya gave me my first supplies and told me to design my own!) Now I am just about finished with writing a book to help you do the same.
Rya enthusiasts can be happy to have found not only a source for excellent quality rya supplies, but also a wealth of information on rya rug making. In fact very soon I will complete and publish a book of Designing and Making your Off-Loom Rya! To keep informed, please sign up for my monthly newsletter by going to my website, www.byrdcallstudio.com, and sign up in the right hand margin.
In the meantime, you might enjoy the video I made several years ago. It has been viewed by over 1/2 million people around the world and was the catalyst for me to provide supplies to all who want them--now that the producers have found me! Cut-and-paste this link to go to Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trl3V5Q2kG4&feature=youtu.be
I hope you enjoy looking at the wide variety of work I do. If you are wondering why I have such a wide range of arts in my shop, it is because these are all things I am passionate about. My woodcut prints and linocut prints are a unique specialty. For fun, watch my woodblock carving process at this link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2hguBvmZb4
Keep coming back to see new additions.
Cheers and peace,
Melinda

4 out of 5 starsPrompt. Prompt delivery. Wish I didn't have so many projects in the works because I'd explore Rya rugs!

5 out of 5 starsNot only did I get the backing promptly, but it came with a few stitches already made for me since I had mentioned I was a beginner. Melinda is very helpful and gets right back to you if you have any questions. I will continue to order from Byrdcall!

About Byrdcall

This is a kit with the design drawn on the backing--no graph to follow. There are approx. 20 colors for you to blend.
-
I provide the backings, yarn, needles, graph paper, and some kits. More kits will be listed in the coming year.
-
FireFlower; Another design drawn on the backing (or ask for it on a graph). Comes in several color choices.
-
Watch for this listing of ANEMONE from Rauma of Norway. I can get it for you and get you started with translations.

This is one of my recent creations in rya. It is called WaterSwirl. It is now available as a kit.
Going Back to My Roots with Scandinavian Rya Rugs
I was born into a rya rug family. My grandparents, Angie and Bill Lundgren were the sole representatives for the Bergå yarn and rya rug company in Sweden for nearly two decades. I worked as designer and “helper extraordinaire” for Lundgren Rya in the late 1970’s – early 80’s. The rya business was sold out of the family in the mid-80’s, yet I continued to make ryas and teach with my small inventory of yarn and backings after moving to Maryland.
In the winter/spring of 2011, I designed and knotted what I thought would be my last rya rug while the local paper, the Carroll County Times documented in photographs and video the entire process for posterity. It is posted on youtube.com and I invite you all to see it. Here is the link: http://youtu.be/trl3V5Q2kG4. Feel free to share this with anybody you think would enjoy it. The video has been seen by over a quarter million people (Jan. 2016).
I have received so many requests for materials and instructions, I have:
>> Started to write a book on Designing and Making Your Off-Loom Rya. It will be released as a book, then as a pdf file as soon as it is completed. (Spring 2016)
>>Found a Norwegian rya supply producer, two Finnish companies, and a Swedish company which supply rya woven backings and yarn. I now am purchasing supplies from them and making them available to you.
>>I “bought back” my grandparents former business, Lundgren Rya, including a huge amount of yarn, backings, 100s of designs, needles, graph paper, etc. This acquisition took place on October 26, 2013!
I have a unique knowledge and skill in designing and calculating needed materials for making rya rugs. I offer my services to help you find materials and develop your technique. I can help you learn to make your own rya rug, or I can match you with a talented knotter who can make it for you.
