A love of nature and geology starts a new career.
Después de retirarme de mi primera carrera, enseñando matemáticas, simplemente no pude decidirme por una segunda carrera. Era demasiado joven para simplemente sentarme, pero nada realmente me inspiró de la manera en que lo hizo la enseñanza. Realmente disfruté estar al aire libre y me gustaba aprender sobre la historia geológica de Montana, así que comencé a perseguir rocas como un pasatiempo que me llevaría afuera y arriba en las montañas. Un pariente, que es dueño de una joyería, me sugirió que aprendiera a facetar piedras preciosas y moler cabujones. Desde el primer día me enganché. Muy pronto pasé la mayor parte de mi tiempo en la tienda haciendo joyas. Entre hacer pedidos personalizados para la joyería y vender piezas localmente, no tardé mucho en darme cuenta de que había encontrado mi nueva carrera. Como dijo mi cuñado: "¡Era un pasatiempo que se le fue tan de las manos que tenías que hacer un negocio con eso!"
Si bien pruebo mi mano en muchos estilos, mi corazón está realmente en hacer piezas de estilo occidental tradicional. Cuando era un pequeño compañero, recuerdo que todos mis héroes eran los viejos vaqueros que vivían en los muchos pueblos pequeños de Montana en los que crecí. Todos esos compañeros tenían una camisa blanca limpia que llevaban a la ciudad el sábado por la noche y luego nuevamente a la iglesia el domingo por la mañana. Recuerdo bien que casi todos llevaban una corbata Montana Agate Bolo. ¡Pensé que eran los Vaqueros mejor vestidos que había visto y quería ser como ellos! ¡Cada vez que hago una bolo tie, me trae todos esos buenos recuerdos! Al vivir en el centro norte de Montana, ¡es fácil inspirarse al hacer una hebilla de cinturón occidental o una corbata de bolo!
After retiring from my first career, teaching math, I just couldn't decide on a second career. I was too young to just sit around, but nothing really inspired me the way teaching did. I really enjoyed being outdoors and liked learning about the geological history of Montana, so I started rock hounding as a hobby that would get me outside and up in the mountains. A relative, who owns a jewelry store suggested I learn how to facet gemstones and grind cabochons. From day one I was hooked. Pretty soon I was spending most of my time in the shop making jewelry. Between making custom orders for the jewelry store, and selling pieces locally, it didn't take long to realize that I had found my new career. As my brother in-law said, "It was a hobby that just got so out of hand that you had make a business out of it!"
While I try my hand at many styles, my heart is truly in making traditional western style pieces. When I was a little fellow I remember that all my heroes were the old cowboys who lived in the many small Montana towns that I grew up in. All those fellows had one clean white shirt that they wore to town on Saturday night and then again to church on Sunday morning. I well remember that almost all of them wore a Montana Agate Bolo Tie. I thought they were the best dressed Cowboys I had ever seen and I wanted to be just like them! Every time I make a Bolo Tie, it brings back all those good memories! Living in north central Montana, it is just easy to be inspired when making a western belt buckle or a bolo tie!
