About

Why Natural Fibers Make the Best Newborn Photo Props

Newborn photo prop shops have been experiencing a booming business in the last few years. Babies first photos have transformed into a pure art form, and props help bring those visions to life.

Everyone has different tastes and expectations for their newborn photos. For a long time, it was believed that all natural fibers were itchy and uncomfortable. The last thing you want on delicate newborn skin, right? This belief brought on an onslaught of bulky props all made with the same materials in each shop.

I’m here to tell you that this doesn’t have to be the case! Natural fibers can actually be ideal for new babies and the perfect props for newborn photos. With the right materials, it IS possible to create stunning, SOFT, unique items for babies.

Natural photo props can add an organic look to your newborn photos. This helps you create the clean, simple settings that allow a new baby to be the star of the show. They help bring out the delicate, natural beauty of a new baby, without overpowering the image.

With a combination of delicate stitches and natural fibers, I can create the perfect props for your newborn sessions. One of the most popular, my Sweet Daisy set, is created from a luxurious angora yarn, and a simple – but stunning – stitch pattern. See a photo of this set in the slideshow at the top of this page to see just how perfect the pairing is.

Some of my favorite items to make include newborn bonnets, pants, shorts, rompers, overalls, and hats. These are all knit from quality, natural fibers, and help create stunning images for new parents to cherish forever.

-How I Got Started in the Newborn Photo Prop Business-

I have always had a creative side. Growing up, I struggled for years trying to find a way to embrace this creativity. I couldn’t draw, despite my father’s natural ability. I had no rhythm at all, despite my mother being a drummer. I couldn’t sing, like the rest of my family.

One day, my grandmother sat me down and taught me some basic crochet stitches, because she said I needed something to do with my hands. I loved it that first day. Still, I wanted more. Over time, I did what all kids do, and I forgot all about my love of crochet, as my materials gathered dust in the back corner of my closet. During that time I dabbled with jewelry making, sewing, polymer clay, tie dye, and all sorts of other crafts.

I didn’t honestly come back to my hooks and yarn until I was much older. When my daughter was born one Washington winter, I found myself in desperate need of some winter hats for her bald little head. With very little budget for a quality hat, and a strong distaste for the “cheap” hats I found in department stores, I decided to give crocheting another try. I was HOOKED! (←- pun intended). I made her several hats, and then moved on to making hats for my friends’ kids. A year later, I opened my Etsy shop with the goal of keeping myself motivated to create new items. As the sales started rolling in, I changed my goals. I wanted to be able to help support my family. As it was, we were struggling to pay the bills and put food on the table, and I felt like my creative side was the perfect way to bring in a little extra money.

Within a few years, I was bringing in enough money to actually help my family. I did this through various avenues, but without Etsy, I wouldn’t have even been able to start.

When I was pregnant with my second daughter, I decided I wanted to try knitting her some hats and props for her newborn photo session. I’d learned to knit a few years before, but never done anything more advanced than a scarf for personal use. Knitting quickly became an obsession, and before I knew it, she had enough knit props for THREE photo sessions. I posted some of them on my Facebook page (facebook.com/helloseptemberprops), and they were quickly snatched up. I made more, and posted those. Again, they were a big hit. I decided then and there to re-brand my shop, and focus solely on photo props. The majority of my items are now knit, which I feel just has a better fit and drape for tiny newborns. However, some of my more delicate crochet items are still being featured in the shop, as I feel that they also make a great addition to my line and to your photos.

I hope you’ll choose me for your knit prop needs. I have several years of experience creating items for babies and children, a knowledge of what fits and doesn’t fit on new babies, and HUNDREDS of satisfied customers to prove it. Just check out my feedback to see for yourself! I would love to create a trusting business relationship with each and every one of the photographers that gives me a chance.

My dream to live a simpler life started here, with the ability to work from home and stay home with my daughter-my inspiration. Many thanks to my grandmother for teaching me the joy of crochet. Without her, none of this would have been possible.
