About

Calligraphette - recycling script since 2011

Hi there

I'm based in Clapham, South West London, in the UK which is an area known historically as a bit of a haven for artists, writers and designers (anyone heard of Vivienne Westwood, Orla Kiely, or JK Rowling?).

I work from a spare-room in my flat which I converted into an artist's studio or from my lounge as there is an amazing window which looks out onto a rose garden. In the spare-room studio the piles of paper, books of quotes, books of poetry, materials, card, ink, etc. reside, fighting for space with the piles of products I've designed and made.

Why calligraphy?
It's really a love affair, with deep seeded roots. I've always been drawn to script and I am very keen to explore how the use of the forms and shapes of the letters can be manipulated into imagery.

I mainly work with pen, ink and pencil but I love fabric and I'm not afraid to use materials that I've never used before and apply my craft to these.

If you have any ideas for me to explore then I'd love to hear from you.

xx

Welcome to my shop. My name is Mary. I work from my London studio and I am the calligrapher and the main designer behind Calligraphette.

I’m a self-taught calligraphist who started out by studying pictures and books of old Celtic manuscripts. I quickly moved on from there to dying my own paper, creating my own lettering style and even hand-stitching my own envelopes! Lately I’ve been pushing myself to experiment with new techniques such as jewellery-making, screen-printing, foiling, all with calligraphy as their core design theme and I’ve even started to explore some art software programs (which is very scary for an ‘IT-o-phile’ but lots and lots of fun). Hopefully you’ll find my work pleasantly surprising and innovative….and with luck, perhaps there is something in my range that you fall in love with, buy, and tell your friends about.

I’m really keen to get feedback so feel free to drop me a line, or if there is something that you would like but can’t exactly find it via my shop then let me know and I may be able to custom something just for you!
