Creating unique and one of a kind custom knives from unusual and exotic materials.
Jack Cameron began knife making by cutting and grinding blades from metal. He fashioned blades from things such as metal files, leaf springs, railroad spikes, etc. While not a trained blacksmith he has also heated and hand hammer forged primitive style blades. However, most of the knives he produces today are from high quality components which he finishes, shapes and polishes.
The Damascus and stainless steel components he uses are commercially produced by master blacksmiths and metal workers. The knives are then carefully constructed from these components, each receiving their final shape and design through the grinding and file work processes Cameron applies.
The real artistry comes in the handle materials. Choice and exotic hardwoods from around the world which are hand shaped, inlaid and/or hand carved are used on many of his creations. Horn and antlers are a favorite medium for handles, each being hand selected and shaped much like wood. Popular are his handles fashioned from bones, teeth and jaw bones. These are meticulously drilled, shaped and polished producing a natural looking yet functional handle. Semi-precious minerals and stones such as turquoise, onyx or malachite have adorned many knives. Mother of pearl, abalone and other shell materials create "pocket jewelry" in his knives. His favorite and among the most popular material used are fossils. These include teeth from prehistoric and extinct animals or once living coral from the sea. This very rare and expensive materials are extremely difficult to obtain and even harder to work with. Most are very fragile and require a delicate touch. Once fitted against the metal knife components they provide a strong and unique handle. These knives provide a truly unique and one of a kind collector's piece of truly historic significance and why they are his favorites.
Customization of brand name quality knives and/or restoration of vintage knives rounds out the products offered by Cameron Custom Cutlery. Vintage knives obtained from flea markets, estate sales or even from his personal collecting over 50 years are brought back to life and custom touches added. New brand name knives receive customization including handle material and hand file work to the metal, then factory satin or sandblasted finishes are brought to mirror polish by hours of on the buffing wheel. Again, producing a unique piece from a previous mass produced item.
Regardless of whether a knife is produced from scratch, fashioned from components, or a customized factory produced product, EVERY Cameron knife is a unique and one of a kind creation. Designed and built with care to provide functional art.
