About

My artistic courting of texture, horses, earth tones, feathers, and such.

A thumbnail about me ...
A tomboy, I abandoned dolls for playing in the empty lot between my parents house and the next when young. The lot was overgrown with tall weeds and grasses whose height overshadowed me. Carving out a personal hide away in the tall weeds, using the ground as my sofa, exploring the diversity and timelessness of rocks and ledge, hugging the skin of trees that I climbed, a sense of my integral belonging to the earthly world took root. It was the primer for my growing love of the elemental beauty of earth tones and textures of nature.

My paint and personal preference palette is void of pinks and pastels. Taupe, raw sienna, yellow ochre, sepia, sable, sage, burnt and raw umber are the poetry my eyes seek - they visually celebrate the connection I established many decades ago and are my natural indulgence in the creative statements I make today.

This shop showcases my artistic celebration of all those things that I love.

My artistic beginnings ...
In previous lives I’ve been a secretary, manufacturing engineer and most recently owner / partner in a street rod parts business with my husband. In my mid-forties, an ad for a one-night workshop about reawakening creativity through expressive arts appeared to me. It sounded appealing. I went and have never been the same since. Although always creative, I never did “art”. I thought you had to have a degree to be good at it and call yourself an artist. Something about that workshop, however, woke up a dormant seed in me. The key to my success was allowing myself not to be perfect. It gave me the freedom to start drawing my beloved feathers and horses and enjoy the doing, despite how primitive they were at first. I bought art books, watercolor pencils, watercolor and acrylic paint and played, practiced and took an occasional art workshop, all of which helped to define and hone my style. My art is stylized, capturing the spirit or essence of the subject. Apparently George Eliot was right when she said, “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”

The evolution of Carol A. Watson Art ...
When I had several feather drawings and horse watercolors that pleased me, I had them made into note cards and started selling them to local shops and gave them as gifts. That someone else bought them fueled me on further still. I was determined to do a piece of art I would be proud to have hung in a gallery. The water pencil drawing Equine Soul was the first piece I put in a show. It received an honorable mention. That stoked my confidence to do more and different works which, since having found my artist within, have sold in numerous shops, shows, galleries and online. I thoroughly enjoy the art I do and love sharing it. My art is like a voice that conveys what I see and love which mere words just don’t seem able to do adequately.

Etsy is an opportunity to reach more people and share the variety of art I create. Inspiration is everywhere and is hard to keep reigned in, so here you’ll find originals and prints, Petite Inspirational Collages, watercolor, mixed media, acrylic, paper collages, equine and feather, canine and dragonfly, abstract art, and various ways I channel creativity and repurpose some of my original works.

In my watercolors you’ll see evidence of the fluidity that I love about the medium, pools of color, hard edges and the surprise of colors coming together at random adding texture and visual spice. Being a tactile person, collage and mixed media are favorite mediums. I’m drawn to the repeated and intuitive process of trial and elimination to find the right paper or material to make a piece come alive. Painted papers or tissue paper, paper towels, and corrugated cardboard - anything’s game to use in a piece if it appeals to my aesthetic eye.

I hope that when you come to visit you’ll discover a connection from your own unique experiences that evokes a personal sense of belonging to my art as well. Listen to what makes your heart sing ...

Welcome to Carol A. Watson Art! I'm tickled that you saw something that intrigued you to visit. Art is how I visually celebrate and describe what moves me soulfully. I embrace Aristotle's take on the intention of art. He said, "The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things but their inward significance." I hope you'll discover a connection from your own unique, personal experience that will evoke a personal sense of belonging to some of my art.
