"To travel is to possess the world"
I have loved photography and travel for as long as I can remember. Naturally, that means there are a few hundreds of thousands of photos from places around the world in my home...dawn from a hot air ballon over Turkey, the streets of old Havana Cuba, walks along the Seine, and hikes in the rain among the giant redwoods in California to name a few favorites. A few years ago, a friend suggested I share my photos on Etsy. And thus, my shop began.
“To travel is to possess the world,” I once read. These pictures are my souvenirs. They are moments suspended in time. I’m haunted by the forgotten, the old—the fading ambiance, the mystery of a once bigger world, the simplicity, the wisps of disappearing places and ways. I want to capture the light, colors and moods of a place, of a person…the daily life, the movements, the solitude, the quiet of the early mornings, the glow of twilight, the stillness in the nooks and crannies, and the soon-to-be past.
I am inspired by the saturated colors in old linen postcards, hand-tinted glass slides and ephemera that remain from the Grand Tour era. Sometimes I look for ways to give my photographs that touch of the old times by layering textures, colors and collage in my digital darkroom.
I still sometimes shoot film! I have a family of 14 working cameras, and only 3 are digital. There are a few retired, "just because they're pretty", cameras sitting on a shelf in my studio too.
I’ve been taking pictures most all my life. Over the past few years, I’ve tried to make photography a bigger part of my life, with this shop and with several art shows in Chicago. These days, I am concentrating on visual storytelling--in Cuba and Guatemala and with dog rescue organizations. I am also shooting stories about middle-age changes and aging, about my Tennessee family and my Chicago neighborhood. My work has been exhibited at Cafe 28 and has been featured on several travel sites, including National Geographic Traveler.
Thanks for stopping by! To keep up with the latest work, or to request prints of work you see that is not on my Etsy site, please follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest and/or LinkedIn. You can also sign up for my newsletter at the bottom of the www.carolfletcher.com home page.
Owner, Owner, Photographer
I am inspired by--and addicted to--travel. Photography is a way for me to see memories later...the light, colors, moods of a place and her people. Today, I am focused on visual stories about Cuba, rescue dogs, aging and my Chicago neighborhood.
