About

Carol Roque

My focus in art is in oil painting. I also work in digital mixed media, in collaboration with Aldo Jeffrey under the pseudonym of BrokeBot. My personal work is composed primarily of portraiture of characters from an imaginary world, where through them I explore my own emotions, feelings, or things that intrigue me.

I've dedicated my life full time to oil painting for 8 years now, after attending the Art Institute of Phoenix and graduating with an art degree in Media Arts and Animation (in Dec. 2007). I didn't have a passion for animation though and I found a love for painting; so I decided to pursue a career in Fine Art instead. Even though I started digitally, I decided I would learn to paint in oil. There's just something romantic about the idea of painting in the same media as the old masters did.

"Each month, BELOW delves into the mind of one of our artists to learn more about them and their work. Along with the introduction to their thoughts and processes, we offer up their goods at a special discount for the month. January’s feature brings us into the imaginative world of CAROL ROQUE.

What is your workspace like?
My workspace mostly consists of my St. Remy easel, a rolling shelf cart, and a desk that doesn’t get too much use. All of which take up almost my entire living room. Paintings hang on all the walls of the tiny house I live in.

What inspired you to start painting?
My memories tell me I spent a lot of my time drawing, growing up. I never thought that being an “artist” was a realistic thing though. One day in college, someone saw an image I had made for a Digital Ink and Paint class. They told me about how they’d been selling art at an artwalk downtown, said I should check it out. Said they’d let me display stuff on part of their table. I took him up on it. I prepared prints of a handful of drawings I had in a sketchbook. I was really shy and the whole time I hardly wanted to be there, but at the end of the night I had actually sold 9 copies of my prints, earned $45, I was so elated and surprised. I’m pretty sure that in that moment, when I realized that someone had wanted things I had made, I felt more true joy and pride, than I had known to be possible. Ever since then, I decided I would paint for a living. Even though I started digitally, I decided I would learn to paint in oil. There’s just something romantic about the idea of painting in the same media as the old masters did.

What are some of your ongoing inspirations/influences?
I’ve always loved admiring art, and truly find joy in looking at and appreciating images that move me. A lot of my favorite paintings will never cease to inspire me. The thing that inspires is not only the subjects of the paintings, but also the skill possessed by the artists that create them. As much as I love art, I don’t really have a specific influence or source of inspiration, but I find that there is beauty everywhere in the world, and just living, and life itself, is inspiring. With my work, I aim to add to that beauty, and I feel that, is just what most artists do, they reinterpret the beauty they see, and, I am no different.

Can you tell us a little about your process of creating?
I begin somewhere, with an idea. I alter it, playing with it in digital media. I redraw it onto, preferably a piece of mounted hardboard, and go from there. I generally paint in layers, wet on dry. I am hoping to change it up at some point, and paint wet into wet, and hopefully speed up my process.

Who are your favorite artists?
Odd Nerdrum, Ray Caesar, David Choe, Mark Ryden, Colette Calascione, Nicolas Uribe, Barnaby Whitfield, Gregory Jacobsen, Vincent Xeus, Martin Wittfooth, Nicola Samori"
