About

Humorous and whimsical robot sculptures, assemblage art dolls, art magnets, and art masks.

Welcome to my shop of robot sculptures and assemblage art dolls. I create my art work using found and recycled objects, in my studio in Birmingham AL. I dabbled in photography and worked as a graphic designer for 17 years and had never thought of making art with found objects, until about 13 years ago when I took a metal fabricating class at Sloss Furnaces. There I learned how to weld and use other equipment to assemble metal I picked up at a scrap yard into mostly functional pieces.

During one scavenger trip, I found a piece of metal that resembled a face. I then went back to the studio and used it to create a figurative sculpture that was funny and whimsical. I knew I had discovered something special that really resonated with me, and making my characters has been a passion ever since. I hope my cast of characters make people smile or laugh!

It is so much fun and challenging to take the most common unrelated objects mostly made of metal, that show the imperfections and patina of time, and look at them from a new and unexpected point of view— transforming them into something beyond what they were intended, something surprising, and often humorous and whimsical. I love scouring for these objects from antique malls to scrap yards, eBay, and Etsy. The objects are joined together mainly using welds, rivets, and screws. I started incorporating fabric into some of my sculptures, which adds a whole new dimension to my work.

My artwork has been shown in several galleries across the south, and in juried shows. My work is in private collections across the US, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia, including those of comedian Rosie O’Donnell, actor Zach Braff, and folk art collector Robert Cargo. My art work has been in several selective exhibitions: “Art of the Robot,” at the Ocala Museum of Art, Ocala, Florida (2013), and the i.d.e.a. Museum, Mesa, Arizona (2014); and “Upcycled Art Show,” Troika Contemporary Crafts Gallery, Floyd, Virginia (2013). I received an Award of Merit at the Great Gulf Coast Art Festival in Pensacola, Florida in November of 2006.

Thank you for visiting Cast of Characters!

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

CUSTOM ORDERS: If you request a custom order and it’s NOT a theme piece no deposit is required. After completion of your order I will convo you with a photo for your approval. If you’re satisfied with your sculpture then you can proceed to pay.

For a customized, themed piece order I require a 50% deposit. If you are not satisfied with your themed piece and decide not to purchase it I will list it on Etsy. A themed piece may not appeal to a wide audience and may be hard for me to sell so the deposit is to recoup for my time and materials.

Gift wrapping and packaging

If the item you purchase is a gift for someone I will be glad to ship it directly to them and if you would like me to include a card please let me know.
