You are wondering what is this quote nonsense going on up above. I found it fitting because of the origin of the name of the shop. The idea to begin a business started out like most people’s being a mix of wanting to follow/do things we are passionate about and wanting to get out someone extra help with the current income. We already knew we wanted to sell a variety of different items and we didn’t want to limit the potential of what we could do. Then came time to think of a name for the business. Originally, we wanted to loosely base the name off the Schrodinger’s cat idea somehow. But nothing really came to mind.

Then one cloudy morning on the way to the city bus stop with my sister I thought I heard something. I quickly ignored the sound. Then as we were passing a small set of stairs that consists of just two steps, something small and furry literally tumbled into my leg, and then began meowing very loudly. It was a very, very small kitten. I had seen strays around the area before, not this small. He looked no older than maybe one month. Unfortunately our apartments don’t allow pets, so I knew we couldn't keep him. After further looking at him, I also learned that somehow he got gum in his hair. We discovered a box semi-nearby that had a bowl of what look like water. It looked like someone had abandoned him. So, in that moment, a decision was made after getting a clean box from the store across the street. We brought some kitten milk for him and then cleaned him. Then after a good minute of drying off, he finally fell asleep on my sister’s lap where he looked content. However, during this what seemed like a peaceful moment, my sister discovered he had a very deep hole on his neck. Almost like a bite mark. At this point, we were already worried about finding him a home because no one we knew could take him. We didn’t want to take him to the shelter because of all the horror stories we have heard. But upon this new discovery, we decided to go ahead and do so. We wish could be selfish and keep him, but we knew that would not be fair to him, especially with our current living conditions. There were many things that are hard to do in life, but I do believe that was one of the hardest. After spending eight hours with this sweet, calm mannered kitten and then giving him away, took every bit of strength I had. The picture that stuck in my head the most was how he would look up at me from his box as if worried that he would be abandoned again and I had to comfort him. Like a kitten in a beat up box, wondering if it’s next home will be its forever home, we too wonder when we would find a permanent home.

That is how our business name became “Cat Box Crafts”. We are striving to save up enough to finally buy a permanent place to call home. The picture of the kitten looking up out of the box was designed after the kitten we found. The good news is that we did discover after looking at the adoption page of the shelter almost every day that he was finally put up for adoption and just a few days later, he was adopted.
