What's in the box?

Cat In The Box Creations (CITBC) started with only the supplies that fit within a 12" by 8" treasure chest. Today CITBC is a professional studio creating unique scratching posts and cat toys that are both beautiful and functional.

To see CITBC product demonstrations and video of kittens in foster care, visit

CITBC fully supports the "Educate, Don't Amputate" campaign to end cat declawing and give owners viable alternatives that both save their furniture and their cat's fingers.

I'm a one-woman show, everything in my shop has been created by my 2 hands. The cat toys I create are very labor-intensive and of the highest quality,

Cat toys end up everywhere and cats drag their toys about for everyone to see. That's what they do, they're CATS! As cat owners we resign to certain facts, including the fact that our floors will always and forever be inhabited by cat toys. So why can't these toys be beautiful and interesting to look at?! That's where I come in. Functional, safe, BEAUTIFUL cat toys.

My scratching posts are a practical and extremely durable alternative to declawing your cat(s). Giving your cat an appropriate outlet to conduct their natural desire to scratch can often save you thousands of dollars in furniture repair bills. Declawing ANY cat means literal amputation, which can lead to ☞lifelong pain☜ for your feline, in addition to an array of negative behaviors that can develop post-surgery (litter box avoidance & biting are the most common).

EDUCATE, DONT AMPUTATE!! There are NUMEROUS alternatives to declawing that can both save your furniture AND save your cat's fingers. Visit for more information on alternatives to declawing.

☺ I want you to be happy and I will try my best to make you happy. ☺

However, if you are not happy for reasons of blatant material malfunction, defect or item misrepresentation, I will accept an item be returned for a refund of the original purchase price, less original shipping (those funds were used to ship the item to you and are no longer available for return). You are responsible for return shipping costs unless we agree differently. Each situation is different, let's cross those bridges when they come. I'm a reasonable person, I'm hoping you are too. :-)

There are no returns on custom ordered items. It was made for you, it belongs to you.

__________Payment Methods__________

If you're an international spy and a paper trail isn't for you, I do accept cash by mail if you want to chance it, but I really don't recommend it. It's up to you, you're an adult, weigh the consequences your own risks. I do NOT accept Money Orders (due to fraudulent copies circulating) or personal checks (same reason). I do accept echecks and bank transfers through PayPal in addition to all major credit cards. PayPal rocks and is safe. I've used it for over a decade without incident. My personal preference is PayPal without question.

__________Custom Orders__________

✪ For orders up to $59.99 (before s/h):
Full payment is due anytime between when your custom order is listed and when your item is shipped. You will receive at LEAST 2 emails from me in this process, one with the custom listing URL and one letting you know the item is complete. Once the order is complete you have 3 business days to pay.

✪ For orders $60+ (before s/h):
All custom orders $60 and above require 50% at the time of commission (before work is started) and 50% at the completion of the order. You can pay the 1st half by buying your custom listing link, and the 2nd half will be billed to you via PayPal at the completion of the piece. You will receive at LEAST 3 emails from me in this process, one email with the custom listing URL that you'll buy prior to the start of the creation process, one email letting you know the item is complete, and a third email via PayPal for the second 50% installment. The 1st installment of all custom order work is non-refundable unless I have to cancel the order for reasons out of my control (zombie invasion, tsunami, the apocalypse, house fire, etc). In these cases you will receive a full refund with my sincerest apology. To date I have *never* had to cancel an order. :-D
(S/H Policies also apply to all TopHatter sales)

I use UPS or USPS depending on which is faster/ more affordable. All orders over $100 will need to be signed for. If needing to sign for the package is a problem for you, CONVO me or include a note in the payment section indicating a non-signature delivery method.

✮ I've estimated the shipping and what is listed is the *most* you'll pay. If I pack up your shipment and find you've overpaid, I will refund you the excessive shipping charges (minimum refund amount of $1.00 required). Shipping costs are determined by three things: actual postage, packing material cost, and PayPal transaction fees. I try to ship packages as frugally as possible. I DO reuse clean, sturdy recycled materials when I can to reduce/eliminate packing material cost for you. I hope you use recycled packaging for mailing things too; it not only saves EVERYONE money, but our planet can use all the help it can get!

Local residents within 10 miles of Iowa City, CONVO me to obtain a free-shipping coupon code and we can meet somewhere to complete the transaction (confirmed Iowa City address via PayPal required). It's a waste of your money to ship something across town, that's silly!

Q. What size cat toy is best for my cat?

A. Kitten-sized sisal balls are 1 & 1/2 inches in diameter with limited/lighter add-ons, whereas adult sisal ball toys are 2 & 1/2 inches in diameter and contain much more of everything. To humans the difference in slight, but to cats only a few pounds in mass it can be the difference between enjoying a toy and walking away. Since even adult cats love my kitten-sized toys, kitten-size balls are for ages 4wks-20+yrs, they are truly a full lifespan toy.Typically, adult-sized toys are best enjoyed by cats OLDER than 16-20wks (4-5 months).

Q. Have your own cats played with these toys? I thought I saw some cats in your photos.

A. Although there may be cats in some of my cat-product pictures, the few minutes it took to take the photo were the *only* moments cats were alloud to be anywhere around/on/near the numerous cat-intended things I have for sale in my store. Your scratching post and/or toy will come free of my own cats scent markings, a blank slate for your own kitty to claim as their own. =^..^= In fact, all cat-toys and cat furniture is stored away from cats and are sprayed with KONG catnip infused spray to guarantee immediate cat-inticement!

Q. Wouldn't a mannequin scratching post just teach a cat to scratch/attack humans?

A. Okay okay, it's an amusing mental image and might make a good parody sketch topic, but your cat doesn't personify the mannequin like we humans do. The mannequin scratching posts don't smell like a human, they don't move like a human, they don't sound like a human and they don't taste like a human. Cats are attracted to scratching against sisal rope because of its texture and real humans are never going to feel like sisal rope. The artistic irony of the mannequin BEING a scratching post is received only by humans. As far as cats are concerned, its just a very large scratching post to play on and make their own. Don't worry, you're not going to train your cats to scratch actual humans. Quite the opposite! Besides, have you ever tried to TRAIN a cat to do *anything?* Enough said. ;-D

Happy Etsy'ing!
