Custom Ceramics Made by Us for You and Your Pets

It all started with a few rough days at the office! The rest was meant to be...

Chuck came home one day and announced that he wanted to find a place to throw a few pots in order to de-stress...and see if he could still do it. You see, Chuck had found the enjoyment of making pottery in a ceramics class in college and often spoke of how much he loved it but he hadn't done it in years.

Theresa knew Chuck could use a creative outlet to help him unwind so she had already researched places where they might get their fingers in some clay. One of them was right in their town's park district. They signed up that night and the program miraculously started the following Tuesday!

After six weeks at the park district studio, it was obvious that Chuck was having a ball. This was Theresa's first time trying ceramics and she quickly found that she liked the art and science of it too. Their wheels started turning to figure out how to set up a home studio.

Amazingly, an eBay search turned up a virtually brand new potter's wheel for sale by a woman two towns over. She had received it new as a birthday gift just months earlier and she was heartbroken to have to sell it. But, her family was relocating to Paris and she couldn't take it to where they were moving. Wrong electrical requirements and all. Chuck and Theresa bid on the wheel, won the auction and picked up the wheel a few days later. Since the seller could tell it was going to a ceramics-loving home, she tossed in the stool, all her spare clay and tools as she wasn't going to be moving them anyway. The studio setup had taken a huge leap forward!

Next came the kiln. They opted to purchase an electric kiln which could be run off of solar power and found a supplier about twenty minutes away. After researching the electrical requirements and getting the changes made that the kiln would need, they excitedly brought home a shiny silver and red Skutt model. It was more exciting for them than any new car purchase they had ever made! ;-)

For the many evenings and weekends that followed, the pair could be found in the studio playing with clay, experimenting with new ideas, learning how to control the kiln and just having a great time. From this joy and love of ceramic arts, CatTail Studio Arts was born. It was meant to be.

Frequently asked questions

Gift wrapping and packaging

We are happy to wrap an item as a gift and include a note as long as you let us know the occasion and what you would like on the note. Also, if the gifted item needs to ship to an address other than what is on your order, you will need to let us know.

Please note that ceramics items require good padding in shipment so a gift-wrapped item will contain bubble wrap inside and outside of the gift wrap in order to make sure the item makes it safe and sound. If you do not want bubble wrap inside the gift, then you will need to order it and wrap it when you receive it.

Care instructions

Unless noted otherwise, all of our items are made with dishwasher, microwave & oven-safe materials and we only use lead-free, food-safe glazes. Of course, if an item is dainty or has elements that could easily crack or break, then you are better off washing by hand and avoiding rapid temperature changes.

When using a stoneware item in the oven, it should not go through rapid changes in temperature such as going straight from refrigerator to pre-heated oven. It is recommended that you put the pot in the oven prior to preheating so it comes up to temperature with the oven or sits out to achieve room temperature prior to cooking.

Sizing details

All of our listings contain the imperial and metric dimensions and capacities shown in the listing. If you require a different size, we are happy to entertain making a custom size for your needs. Just ask.

Custom and personalized orders

We are happy to discuss a custom order with you. Just send us a convo.

Several of our items already include an option for personalization. If you have a request for personalization on an item that isn't shown that way, just ask.

Wholesale availability

We are a small home-based studio who currently does individual pieces and small orders. Therefore we are not a good fit for a large wholesale request. However, if your needs are for small quantities or something unique, we are happy to discuss the possibilities. Please send us a convo so we can see if it is a good match for both of us.

What is the time line when creating ceramics?

There are several steps in the process of designing and creating every piece of ceramics. None can be rushed without running the risk of damaging the piece and having to start over.

1) Working with Wet Clay to Form the Piece - 3-4 days
2) Drying the Greenware - up to 10 days
3) Bisque Firing - once there are enough pieces to fill the kiln, 2 days
4) Glazing the Piece - 2 days
5) Glaze Firing - once there are enough pieces to fill the kiln, 2 days

Once these steps are complete, if the kiln gods have smiled on us, a piece is ready to ship. As you can see, every piece takes a minimum of three weeks to complete if we are starting from scratch and could easily take six weeks depending on conditions.

If there is only one item in inventory, can I order more than one?

Please send us a convo. We are happy to make more of most items shown in our shop. We are also happy to change colors and sizes, if needed, as long as the colors are achievable and the sizes fit in our equipment.

What do I do if a piece arrives broken?

We do our best to package every piece well prior to shipping. In the unlikely event that a piece arrives broken, please take photos in the original packaging showing the original box as soon as you discover the damage. Contact us immediately and send the photos.

If the piece can be remade, we will likely offer to do so. If it was one of a kind, we will likely offer a refund.
