About

About the beads

Rolling paper beads is a traditional craft that has been around since the early 1900’s. I first learned it from my mother who had learned it from her mother.
Victorian ladies would gather to make beads, just as they did with quilting and knitting. It was both a social gathering and a productive activity. These women would use scraps of wall paper and hand roll the beads on knitting needles. They would string them onto long pieces of yarn to make beaded curtains used to separate rooms. Some of their prettier beads were used to make jewelry.
These early paper beads were sealed and preserved using paraffin or bees wax. The rolled beads were dipped into melted wax then rubbed between the palms of their hands to give the beads a little shine. Examples of these early beads can still be found on the internet. And if you’re very lucky,
occasionally in your grandma’s collection of jewelry.
Today, my paper comes from a variety of sources: magazines, church bulletins, scrapbook paper, wall paper and wall border, newspaper and junk mail. Any paper can be used and the resulting beads can have a very different finished appearance.
I cut all of my own paper, roll my beads on tooth picks and secure with white glue. The beads each receive at least two seal coats and two finish coats (Polycrylic) to bring them to a satin or glossy shine. This makes the beads very durable and water resistant.
I have taken this traditional craft and given it a contemporary twist, Cate Tails Creations rolled paper beads are not your grandma's beads. Enjoy!

Additional policies and FAQs
• Custom work is available. If you see an item that you would like in a different size or color, I will make it for you if I have the materials available. Please keep in mind that every bead is unique which means that every piece is One-Of-A-Kind (OOAK). So while I can make several similar items (such as for a bridal party), please know that each item will be unique.

• Consider having a custom piece/set made from a special photograph. No picture will be harmed in the making of your jewelry. It will be scanned, enlarged, reprinted and returned. (Even easier – send the digital copy in a convo!) Only then will it be cut and rolled to be turned into your wearable memories. The options are limitless. Provide invitations, playbills, daily itineraries from your cruise, whatever you choose to use - surprise me. Please convo me for details.

• Consignment and wholesale inquiries welcome.. I also offer discount pricing or free shipping for bulk orders. Convo me for further information.

• Most of my items are made from paper and while they are water resistant, they are not waterproof. Treat these wearable pieces of art respectfully and you will be able to enjoy wearing them for years. Never submerse them in water. They may be cleaned by gently wiping with a damp cloth. Store out of direct sunlight to maintain their original colors.

• The items I make are not toys and are not intended for children under 3. They may contain small parts that pose a chocking hazard.

Please leave feedback so that I know you received your item and are happy with it. I will then leave feedback for you.
