So pretty! Arrived quickly and was very well packaged, too.
I start with bagged clay (not enough time in the day to dig my own), and hand build using a slab roller, or throw items on the wheel. I use a process called slip trailing on most of my pieces where liquid clay is drawn on the pot. The slip lines create texture, which allows the glazes to "break" over them, or enhance them. The piece is dried, and then bisque fired in a kiln for 10 hours to harden it. My pieces are then glazed and re-fired at cone 6 for 10 more hours. There are at least two glazes on all my pieces. I have found that single glazes don't give me the depth I want. My sunflower series pieces are handled 6 times in the glazing process and use 4 different glazes. My sunrise sunset pieces use 4 glazes and are also handled 6 different times in the glazing process. That does not include loading and unloading the piece from the bisque kiln, and then the glaze kiln. It is rather labor intensive, but I find the results worth the effort. I experiment all the time with glazes, colorants and the limits of clay's plasticity.

I'm a studio potter and love my job. I've been working in clay since 1990. I love its properties, flexibility and "getting dirty". It has it's rewards, failures which are learning opportunities, and the creative process is addictive.
