About

Caveat Emptor Costumes and Historical Millinery

Luna Chenault of CAVEAT EMPTOR COSTUMES AND HISTORICAL MILLINERY has been fascinated by historical costuming since childhood. Her grandmother was a career seamstress for a high-end ladies' clothing store during the heyday of the downtown, and passed her skills and depression-era "conserve and reuse" work ethic on to her children and grandchildren. Luna has been sewing since she was old enough to pick up a needle, and quickly incorporated costumes into her everyday school attire, earning her a reputation for eccentricity in the 80s fashion-plate society of her home town.

She discovered the worlds of thrift shopping and theatre costuming upon arriving in the big city of Houston for college. Using her family-honed eye for bargains and makeover-potential items, she costumed many student theatre productions and always had a considerable stock of garb on hand to loan friends and fellow students for campus activities, Renaissance Fairs, and Society for Creative Anachronism events. Luna spent the 90s in Austin, Texas, soaking in the city's unique culture and conducting extravagant costume parties to feed her love of dressing up.

After a brief and lucrative foray during the dot.com days in a software startup, she moved to New Orleans with the express purpose of opening a historical costume shop. New Orleans's rich vintage finds and cultural traditions led her to a love of hats, which she wore everywhere she went to inspire conversation and stand out from the younger crowds. Though her costume shop closed in 2001, she continued to hoard costumes and hats for sale online and for wearing to the city's many balls and parties.

Luna returned to Austin, Texas to start her family and began to teach herself formal techniques to recreate old-fashioned millinery. An admitted shopaholic and scavenger, Luna haunts thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales, estate sales, and antique malls in search of finery with remaking potential. She collects wool and fine straw hat bases to reblock into Victorian and Edwardian shapes, then decorates them with vintage, antique, and upcycled trims to complete the authentic historical look. Gothic, Victorian, Anime, Western, and Steampunk conventions provide a venue for her to display and sell her wares to the public and to meet interesting and inspiring people of all kinds.
