Announcement    CUT OFF DATE FOR PURCHASES TO ARRIVE IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS IS 11/25. SHIP BY DATES ARE ONLY AN ESTIMATE. Welcome to our family shop based on the New Hampshire seacoast. Every piece listed was poured, cleaned, and fired by ceramic artist and instructor, Barbara Young. You don't have to be an experienced ceramic artist to paint. Buy a piece, get some acrylic paint and brushes, and have fun! Ceramic painting is a fun hobby for all adults and children...and relaxing. Enjoy browsing!

DRY BRUSHING means to apply a non-fired stain lightly onto a base coated, bisque piece (fired), slowly building the color using different shades. After piece is done spray with clear acrylic sealer. You can buy acrylic paint at any Walmart or Michaels. I've used brands such as Apple Barrel, FolkArt, Craft Smart, Americana, DecoArt, Delta Ceramcoat, and Anita's.

GLAZING is best to make the piece waterproof. Applying glaze evenly can be difficult, and the glazes change color after firing so go slowly. Multiple coats must be applied. I generally add three coats. Any imperfections can be wiped off with a wet sponge. While firing the piece in the kiln after glazing brush hairs that stick to the piece will burn off.

Ceramics is known as "the world's most fascinating hobby."

Barbara Young is a multitalented instructor who has been with the Exeter Parks and Recreation for over 35 years. She received her certification with the National Ceramic Association in 1974 and has instructed children and adults in this exciting hobby for over 40 years. She teaches painting techniques in both stains and/or glazes on cast pieces (made from molds).

What is Ceramics?
Known as an important plastic art, "Ceramics" (derived from Keramos, Greek for 'potter's clay') refers to items made from clay bodies and fired in a kiln to obtain the finished form.
