Updates

It's a sad day as I take the decision to discontinue the #leatherearedmouse.
As I have developed carpal tunnel syndrome, I am saying 'Goodbye' to this labour intensive cat toy.
Originally, this cat toy was handcrafted to upcycle left-over cardboard.
Coming soon...a collection of Sisal Cat Scratchers for the cat who prefers sisal.
Uniquely, the sisal unit is fully replaceable and, being identical in design to my cardboard collection, the sisal sleeve is even interchangeable with my cardboard sleeve!

About

My pet products are a result of my love for my pets, and my appreciation for art and design.

CHARLEY AND BILLIE

Charley and Billie began in 2013 with the arrival of my two British shorthair cats, Charley and Billie, when I struggled to find a high quality and functional cat scratcher which would compliment the traditional and contemporary surroundings of my home.

HANDCRAFTED

Making the Charley and Billie cat scratchers is very much a home affair with the Charley and Billie always on hand with their antics. Handcrafting involves at least 6 hours of working with the different materials, including one hour alone given to cutting over 100 cardboard inserts for the shortest cat scratcher in my range. Imagine an event when Charley and Billie sneaked into my store of hundreds of stacked cardboard inserts and the mess I encountered when they both had the urge to dive in! Assembly of the components is one of the most satisfying aspects with Charley and Billie eager to assist with scratch quality control - of course this offer is always declined! The icing on the cake has to be the humble surprise I feel when I hear a 'kerching' and in that instant wondering which worldwide country I will be shipping to.

The design and choice of materials always begins with my vision to create quality products that not only function, but which are also visually aesthetic for you – where function and aesthetics fuse. Charley and Billie’s philosophy is guided by principles which relate to environmental impact. Meaning I choose to use:

•materials and services sourced locally;
•ethically sourced stone;
•recycled and recyclable cardboard, and;
•sustainably sourced timber.

THE END PRODUCT

Research tells us that the act of scratching is an innate need for the cat, and that both cardboard and sisal are two top materials the cat prefers for scratching (Dougherty, 2014). In conjunction with the cardboard being compressed the cardboard cat scratcher achieves the intended purpose of both attracting the cat and creating a durable object with longevity. The final result for both the cardboard and sisal cat scratchers reveals an art form which presents itself through form, shape, texture and value of light and shadow. This aesthetic quality means the cat scratcher would compliment the traditional and contemporary homes.

PRESENT & FUTURE

Initial encouragement received from my family and friends gave me the belief that my products were worthy of creation. The wonderful comments now being received from viewers and customers continue to inspire me.

I always had the idea to design and create more cat scratchers, so when you asked whether I would consider designing and making a cat scratcher which your cat could easily perch on, a taller cat scratcher for your cat to have a higher reach, and a solid walnut option - I listened! More recently when you asked for a sisal option, I designed and launched a collection of sisal cat scratchers: for the cat who prefers the sisal rope scratch material :)

Frequently asked questions
Which type of cat scratcher would you advise me to buy: cardboard or sisal?

If you are fortunate enough to have a cat that will use either material, or if you are purchasing your cat scratcher for a new kitten then I would always recommend the cardboard cat scratcher. Cardboard is more cost effective as it is a cheaper material and, as a result of compression and a greater scratch depth, has a greater durability and longevity.

When will I need a replacement for my cat scratcher?

CARDBOARD
The cardboard edges will lose their crispness over a period of time, so a tip is to re-order the cardboard inserts for even wear. If you don’t mind the worn look then the cardboard could quite possibly last your cat’s lifetime – depending on the number of cats in your household and the amount of use.

SISAL
I use an 8mm sisal rope, whereas the majority of suppliers use a 6mm, providing you with an additional 2mm of scratch depth. A tip is to remove the sisal unit, spin upside down and replace for even wear. Many cat scratchers on the market only wrap the sisal rope around its core resulting in the whole length of the sisal unravelling if worn through. But, I also use a PVA glue to reduce the likelihood of this happening.

Will I need to encourage my cat to use the cat scratcher?

Research tells us that scratching is an innate need for the cat, and that cardboard and sisal are two top materials the cat prefers (Dougherty, 2014). Customer feedback confirms that many cats instantly take to my cat scratchers, but some may need encouragement. Apply a little dried or spray catnip to the scratch material. Site the cat scratcher where your cat spends most of its time, or near the object you are trying to dissuade your cat from using. I introduced Charley and Billie to their cat scratcher by routinely placing treats on top for them to climb to gain familiarity. Spend time with your cat alongside the cat scratcher and consider demonstrating the act of scratching yourself! Familiarity is key through positive reinforcement.

How stable is the cat scratcher?

Extremely! The Charley and Billie cat scratchers are designed and made with 50mm (2”) depth stone bases to provide stability. This material has been chosen because it has a greater density than, say wood. Therefore, if comparing a stone base with a solid oak base of the same dimensions, the stone would have a greater density, so a greater mass. The end result is a much more stable base and streamlined cat scratcher.

Does the cat scratcher require care and maintenance?

Your cat scratcher will be delivered to you with the oak or walnut waxed with Liberon Fine Paste Wax for feed and protection, and the stone sealed with Cementone Natural Stone Sealer in natural finish for dirt protection. Similar could be used as and when required.

Why should I be careful not to over-tighten the oak/walnut nut on the cardboard cat scratcher?

The oak/walnut nut houses a steel nut which screws onto the threaded bar for compression. I stress that the oak/walnut nut is not to be over-tightened as this could result in the steel nut becoming dislodged. Your cat scratcher will arrive with the required number of cardboard inserts for optimum compression. If you do change the cardboard sleeve I advise you replace with the same cardboard height. To test, slide the whole sleeve onto the threaded rod and replace the top oak/walnut compressor, checking the threaded rod is just visible. If it is not, then remove a cardboard insert until it is. Finally, apply even compression on the top oak/walnut compressor and screw on the oak/walnut nut (you may find it easier with two pairs of hands).

How do I replace the sisal sleeve?

To replace the sisal sleeve:

1. Unscrew the oak/walnut nut and remove.
2. Remove the oak/walnut compressor.
3. Lift off the existing sisal sleeve from the threaded rod.
4. Slide on the replacement sisal sleeve.
5. Replace the top oak/walnut compressor.
6. Screw the oak/walnut nut onto the exposed threaded rod.

How do I replace the cardboard sleeve?

1. Unscrew the oak/walnut nut and remove.
2. Remove the top oak/walnut compressor.
3. Lift off the recyclable cardboard inserts from the threaded bar.
4. Slide on the replacement cardboard inserts.
5. Twist as desired.
6. Replace the top oak/walnut compressor, checking that the threaded rod is just visible (if not, remove a cardboard insert until it is).
7. Apply even pressure on the top oak/walnut compressor.
8. Screw the oak/walnut nut onto the exposed threaded rod, being careful not to over-tighten.

You may find it easier with another pair of hands for steps 7-8: one person to apply compression whilst the other screws on the oak/walnut nut.

Could the Replacement Cardboard Sleeve be used as a cat scratcher by itself?

I am aware that there are cat scratchers on the market which are very similar in design to my Replacement Cardboard Sleeve. However, I do not advertise the cardboard sleeve as a cat scratcher to be used alone because the cardboard inserts are delivered free (unattached to one another) and, therefore, lack the compression needed for durability.
