My Vintage Beginnings

I recently found the photo above taken in 1968. That's me down front in the middle...I was around 10 years old at the time.

My great aunt Virginia (to the left of me in the pic) married her long lost college sweetheart that hot summer day...that's my "new" uncle Ed (to my right).

We are standing in front of my family's ancestral home in Abbeville, Alabama. My great-great grandfather build it by hand in the 1870's (the house is currently on the Historical Register is Abbeville). My great grandfather, my grandfather (2nd row/bald guy❤️) and his sister (the bride) were all born in this house.

This is where I discovered a love and appreciation for vintage/heirlooms/antiques during my many summer visits as a kid.

When Aunt Virginia passed in 1998, my mom (back row rocking a yellow polyester dress💛), my daughter, and I went through this house with a fine tooth comb. I discovered so many wonderful treasures that had been tucked away in this home for 125 years! It was a once in a lifetime experience I will always hold dear. I shipped many of the treasures from Abbeville all the way back to Portland, Oregon (and now back south to Tennessee).

See those two white urns that are circled in the photo? My great grandmother bought them in the 1940's and she planted them with red geraniums every year until her passing in 1965.

They came home with me in 1998 and I have cherished them for the past 20 years. Here they are last summer filled with hens and chicks!

Although I didn't plant red geraniums, I like to think that my great grandmother "Nanny Abbeville" would be very pleased.

Addendum: I added another photo of the old house I just re-discovered. It was taken around 1907. The man in the middle is the gent who built the house, my great-great grandfather, Thomas Trawick. His two small grandchildren are on either side. The boy on the left is my grandfather (also seen in later photo as old man (2nd row bald guy) and his granddaughter, my Aunt Virginia (seen in later photo as the bride in the pink dress front row).

As mentioned earlier, that's me, the 10 year old girl (center front row). I just noticed that I am standing in the exact spot as my great grandfather was standing! He died around 1920. I never knew him but have always felt a connection to him. Thank goodness for family photos.

And lastly, I included a photo of my grandfather and his sister, Aunt Virginia as toddlers. They were less that two years apart in age.
