About

Design + Invent + Make

Welcome to Chininis Design Studio!
Glad you could stop by! I take great care with all of my products because I love designing and making products for folks like you. If you like my work please consider helping me spread the word by following me, or by making me a favorite.

My Story:
I grew up going to summer camp, my mother was the nurse, and I found myself drawn to the Arts & Crafts room. It was there that I learned that making things was exactly what I was supposed to be doing. By age 15, I was in charge of the Arts & Crafts program, and I've been designing and making things ever since.

I studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and I am proud to count Viktor Schreckengost as one of my mentors. Like Vik, I am also a teacher, and I'm currently challenging industrial design students at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I focus on teaching students how to invent, design, and then make products, and I consider teaching to be part of my design mission.

After a successful career designing everything from bicycles to medical equipment, I started my own design firm, Chininis Design, in 1992. By 1994 inventing had taken over. It began when I created products for my own children, and before long I had licensing product ideas to many of the leading manufactures in the juvenile products industry such as Fisher Price, Playskool, Kids II, and Little TIkes. As my children grew so did my interests in new product categories like gourmet cooking, iPad accessories, and all kinds of other consumer products. I developed a line of iPad “App-ccessories” that brought Griffin Technology and Crayola together in a joint venture. I hold more than 30 patents and along with my partners have successfully licensed more than 100 products that have been brought to market.

Now I'm having fun developing products that I can sell directly to the folks that use them, like you! New technology (3D printing and laser cutting) has made it possible for me to personalize the work I do. I'm interested in having an active conversation with the people who use the products I design, which will allow me to refine and evolve them over time. I look forward to hearing from you. If you have an idea about how I can make a product work better for you, please let me know! Designing and inventing comes naturally to me . . . and doing what I love . . . makes me a happy camper.

As an Industrial Designer I've been designing products for many years, in fact there is a good chance you have used a product that I have designed, you just didn't know it. Those products were all designed for other companies and sold though the vast retail network, and my connection to the user was lost. Now, I'm delighted to be able to design, invent, and make products that I can sell directly to folks like you. The fun part is that I'm reinventing the way I design products to include the making and selling of the product as an integral part of the process. I have complete control over the process, and that means I can protect the design integrity and make sure you get a product that is simple, beautiful, and works for you. If you ever have a suggestion for a way to improve a product, please don't hesitate to let me know, because I think that designing products should be an ongoing conversation between the designer and the folks that use the products.
