Announcement   High quality materials and meticulous attention to detail make Chisels of Fire your source for fine hand crafted pens, bottle stoppers, and other objects turned on the lathe.

All items are turned by myself in my Nampa, Idaho workshop. My work has won multiple prizes in juried competitions, and I am a member of the International Association of Penturners. I specialize in creative application of traditional lathe turning techniques.

My chisels may be on fire, but nothing beats my "velvet finish!"

I can have virtually anything in my site personalized with a name, date, verse, etc. to make the item more meaningful with laser engraving. Before purchasing, convo me with your idea and I will make it happen for you. Engraving is an additional $5.00 per line.

A note about pen platings:

Every pen that I create uses the same quality components regardless of it's plating, but as with everything in life some things are better than others and this holds true for plating and their wear resistance.

No pen plating will last forever, but some of them will last an incredibly long time when properly taken care of. Don't immerse in water or expose to high heat....these will ruin a pen in no time at all!

Each type of plating used to make pens has a wear rating from 1 to 5 with 5 being the best. I only use platings with a 4-5 rating. I spend a great amount of time selecting the wood or acrylic that I then turn and finish to a high standard. I won't use platings that will not wear well for my customers.

Rhodium & Platinum- The most brilliant and durable. Rhodium sells for as much as $1,500.00 a troy ounce and is used by the world's premier pen artists. Rated #5, and the most expensive pen kits I use.

Black Titanium - Another of the #5 rated platings, Black Titanium gives a dark chrome look that goes so very well with some of the lighter woods and acrylics. It accents the wood and does not over power it.

Gold Titanium - This plating also is rated at #5 and has a brassy/gold look that gives some woods and acrylics a very rich look.

Chrome - We all know the sharp, crisp appearance of chrome. Chrome is rated just below 5 at 4.

Platings I do not use:
- 10K Gold. Althought very popular ,this plating blends nickel and gold. It's an inexpensive plating that in time will wear off. Rating #3
- 24K Gold has a rating of #2 and will wear within 3-4 months
- Satin and colored plating's, most with ratings of 2 or less.

When you use a pen, your hands are in constant contact with the plating and the acid in your hands will affect the cheaper platings. I want your pen to be a cherished possession for a lifetime.

If you ever have a problem with a pen failing or one that shows unusual wear, please let me know and I will take care of it for you.

A striking piece of craftsmanship - and a fantastic looking bit of tree as well! It feels and looks and works really beautifully, even with some pretty heavy use!
