About

Hello!

Hello! I'm Chloe and I make embroidery hoop art, and also produce downloadable PDF embroidery patterns.

I love the possibilities of embroidery and the range of marks and textures that can be built up with stitch. I tend to use back stitch and stem stitch to 'draw' outlines, before using straight stitches of varying lengths to fill in space and add areas of pattern. I am very inspired by Kantha embroidery, building up areas of colour using small stitches.

My inspiration comes from many sources. One of my favourite things to embroider is birds; their colours and patterns lend themselves so well to being translated into stitch, I really enjoy working out ways to translate certain details into areas of pattern (such as feather shapes on their wings) and working out how to stylise and simplify certain areas. I love to stitch pictures of other animals too, I particularly enjoy stitching pet portraits, and I'm also very inspired by plants, gardens and the landscape.

I feel the need to distill things I have seen which have inspired me into pieces of work, it is often as simple as wanting to work with the image of something I have enjoyed. Having said that, although my work could perhaps be described as jolly and illustrative, I almost always aim for it to have a deeper meaning as well as attempting to make it aesthetically pleasing; I often feel like I'm making the work as a sort of appreciation of and dedication to the bird, animal or plant I am depicting.

Although my work is primarily illustrative, occasionally I will make a more abstract piece. I enjoy using this approach to explore colour combinations and ways of arranging stitches to create interesting visual effects.

Drawing is an important part of my process, and when starting a new piece of work I usually make preparatory drawings from my photographs or imagination, but quite often I work spontaneously, laying down stitch to see what emerges. I find that this can often yield exciting results.

I also put together downloadable embroidery patterns. With these, I try to encourage people to experiment a bit and try using different threads/ adding beads etc to make their finished embroidery unique. If you have stitched one of my patterns, I'd love to see a photograph! You can tag images on Instagram with #chloeredfernembroidery or send them to me via an Etsy message.

I started selling on Etsy in 2011.

I am based in the West Midlands UK.

Thank you for visiting!

FAQ

How do your PDF patterns work?
When you purchase a PDF pattern from my shop, you will be able to download two files: one containing the pattern itself, along with information about how to stitch it, and one containing a stitch guide, which will tell you how to do some basic embroidery stitches. The PDFs will require a programme such as Adobe Reader to open in. It is best to view the pattern at 100% so you are seeing the images in the size they were intended.

Patterns can be printed, to allow them to be easily transferred onto fabric using the method described or a method of your choice, and also to allow you to refer to the instructions off screen. The PDFs can also be viewed on phones and tablets which have appropriate PDF viewing software, this can be useful if you like to carry your stitching with you away from the computer.

What if I need more help stitching a pattern I have purchased from you?
You are always welcome to get in touch if you need any extra advice and assistance for stitching a pattern. There is no time frame for this, even if you purchased the pattern a year ago and are only just getting around to stitching it, you are still welcome to get in touch.

Do you offer custom orders?
I love stitching custom orders! If you have something in mind, feel free to drop me a message.

I see you offer pet portrait embroideries, how can I order one of these?
If you would like to order a custom pet portrait embroidery, you can either purchase the listing shown in my shop, and then send a message to me, or if you would prefer you are welcome to send me a message to discuss the process before purchasing.

Pet portraits are created using many tiny stitches, made with quality embroidery thread on a natural coloured fabric backing. Each one is framed in a 4" hoop, in either a pale natural wood colour, or a warm burnt umber shade. The hoop is backed with cream felt and can be easily hung by simply placing the screw at the top over a nail.

Flowers and/ or your pet's name can be added at no extra cost.

To create a pet portrait for you, I will need a clear photograph (or a small selection of photographs if possible, so I can really try to capture their personality) of your pet's face, so that I can clearly see their markings. I find that front on photographs work best for cats, and side on photographs for dogs.

I love to stitch portraits of animals other than cats and dogs too!

Completion time for a portrait is 2 weeks plus shipping time, so please leave enough time if you require it to arrive for a certain date. I often complete portraits much more quickly, but like to give a longer time estimate just in case. I generally advise people to give at least five days for shipping in the UK, 10 days for Europe and at least two weeks or even a bit more for shipping to the US, Australia or any other countries. Often items will arrive more quickly, but again I like to give a longer estimate to avoid disappointment. So completion time is two weeks plus the shipping time to your country :)

Portraits are priced at £50 plus postage.

How should I care for a piece of embroidered hoop art which I have purchased from you?
To clean embroideries it is best to use a very soft dry cloth rather than a damp one to gently remove any dust. Very soft clean makeup brushes work well too. Although I use quality threads and fabrics, it is a good idea to keep your new embroidery out of direct sunlight as all textiles can fade.

Please note that my embroideries are not recommended for young children due to small parts such as beads etc.

I include a number of photos in my listings in an attempt to show the colour of my items accurately, however colours can vary between monitors so the embroidery may appear to be a slightly different colour in real life. If you happened to purchase an item and were unhappy with this in any way I would of course be happy to work with you to try to find a solution.

It would be lovely to know when your item has arrived safely and if you're happy with it; feedback is always much appreciated!
