Senior Syrian Hamster Seed Mix
Species appropriate hamster products.
Species appropriate pet care is care that is in all respects, appropriate for the species. An animal needs to be able to exhibit the behaviors it was made to do to thrive and not just survive — this is the philosophy that I have based all of my hamster care and research on.
In nature, a hamster would be eating a high variety diet consisting of many seeds, grains, vegetables, and bugs. Not a mix of processed junk full of unnecessary additives, colors, and sugars that we typically see in pet stores. A balanced, species appropriate seed mix is what is healthiest for your hamster.
America is one of the most lacking countries in terms of hamster care standards — I wanted to change this. In most other pet care communities from cats, dogs, ferrets, and reptiles, it is common knowledge that natural diets are what is most species appropriate for pets, not pellets and kibble. For some reason we still believe that a pelleted diet is what provides the most adequete nutrition for our hamsters, when this is entirely false on so many levels. Every single pellet or lab block on the market is full of synthetic vitamins to make up for nutritional deficiencies that come with an already low quality diet. These synethetic vitamins found in these pellets are also not in their natural form, making them less bioavailble and less likely to be absorbed and utilized.
When I adopted my first Syrian hamster, Luna, she was eating the famous 50/50 diet of Higgins Sunburst and Mazuri blocks. After a few weeks, she stopped eating the Mazuri blocks all together which is when I started looking for a better diet for her. I found so many great options online from Getzoo to Futterkrämerei to Mixerama, but they were all in Europe and none of them shipped to the US. This is when I decided that my best option would be to make a homemade seed mix.
After nearly a year of researching and reading countless threads on German forums, looking at studies, looking at European mixes, and learning about species appropriate pet diets, I decided to open ChubbyHamsterCheeks to provide owners with a species appropriate seed mix for their hamsters.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my tracking stuck on "Pre-transit?"
This usually just means that USPS hasn't updated your tracking or hasn't scanned your package. However, if you are not sure if your package has been shipped yet, please do not hesitate to send us a message!
Is my package lost?
If you think your package may be lost, please contact us. If it has been over 60 days since your package's expected arrival date and the tracking has not updated, we can either resend the package or issue a refund.
Can I have my seed mix modified?
If you would like to have your seed mix modified, please send us a message. While we cannot formulate a completely new mix for you (With the exception of if you own a Syrian with diabetes) we may be able to substitute or omit certain ingredients.
How long do your products last for?
Please check the description of each product to see how long they last! Seed mixes and natural treats typically last up to a year, and baked treats last for up to 6 months.
Can your mixes be fed alone or do I need to add pellets?
All of our seed mixes are balanced, meaning they do not need added micronutrients. Micronutrients found in pellets are synthetic anyways, which means they are not in their natural form and need to undergo a considerable amount of transformation before your hamster can actually absorb and utilize them.
I want to make my own mix, can you help?
I cannot formulate a mix for you to use specifically for your hamster, it is extremely important to do your own research when making a homemade mix. If you are looking into researching homemade mixes though, I highly suggest reading this article as well as the sources linked under "Recommended Additional Reading" to get you started :)

What is the difference between GA and the Flour:Oil Ratio?
The guaranteed analysis of a mix is the percent of protein, fat, and fiber in a mix. The Flour:Oil ratio is the ratio of starchy ingredients such as wheat, oats, sorghum, etc to oily ingredients such as sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, etc. Arguably, Flour:Oil ratios are much more important than guaranteed analysis because when you are just given a guaranteed analysis, you cannot truly know if a mix is balanced and appropriate for the species of hamster you own. That being said, guaranteed analysis is important as well, but I choose not to obsess over it.
