My story is not so different from that of any other 30-something Aussie girl (yep, still a girl in my head) who up-and-left everything in London.
The first step was to choose a new city, then quit a big job, buy a cheap flight and pack. Everything.
17 brown boxes including a bicycle I still couldn't ride, posted to my new home in Barcelona. Everyone thought it was for a man, but it wasn't. It was for a more comfortable home, sunnier climes, a more meaningful existence. In short; a better life.
Once here, I pottered around wondering: What now?
I'd always crocheted - since my grandmother taught me when I was 6 - and so on my mountain of spare hours I started it again, but this time it all felt so different. Maybe in the strangeness of my new home; a new country, a city I didn't know and a language I had yet to understand, this was the past I wanted to hold on to.
The years spent in big jobs for big brands making big things faded with each tiny stitch. My hours were now spent choosing yarns, seeing and feeling their textures, combining colours and discovering the fabrics they became; to keep someone warm, make them feel loved and appreciated and make them look good.
My shop is full of things I've made through exploring materials that have been lovingly produced by artisans (and admittedly sometimes not so lovingly produced by big companies). Through finding partners for textures and colours and transforming them into something useful. And through applying myself to being true to my own creativity. They are all little expressions of a little part of our world, and I hope you find something you love.
Importantly, I am also investing in educating myself, I want to make films and have found OTOXO productions here in Barcelona. Together with three others, OTOXO and we are creating a documentary film about Adama, a not-for-profit group of volunteer therapists and their not insignificant support staff, who work alongside government centres to provide emotional support to homeless, sick, and others in need.
Our film will be great, we are about to start filming and I need to raise 250€ for the second half of filming.
ALL money raised from my shop will go directly to my tuition and the making of the film.
