About

Playing with color, texture, and juxtaposition

Seeking calmness in the slower pace of embroidery, I've been creating pieces filled with texture and inspired by the colors I pick up in the world around me. I've always ended up gravitating toward juxtaposition in my creative work - be it as a graduate student studying contradictory theories, or as an oil painter when I was younger focusing on surreal subject matter. With embroidery I'm able to embrace a slower process of thinking and working while seeking new ways to work with (textural) juxtaposition. My french knot menagerie series really embraces this slow labor process as I work with the thread to create texturally dense, organic clusters of knots that meet variegated, almost shattered glass-like background stitches. All of my work is (slowly) hand-stitched and created with immense amounts of thought and care. I hope you'll enjoy these little works as much as I enjoy the process of creating them.
