About

My Artwork Explores the Intersection of my Passions: Animals, and Art

My art speaks to the deep concern I have for the wellbeing of the Sonoran Desert ecosystem, as well as endangered or threatened species around the planet.

I am a lifelong career artist with a BFA and MA in Fine Art. My art has been shown in New York City, Los Angeles, and Tucson. I had my own small graphic design studio in New York City, and later Tucson, Arizona. I was Editor and Art Director of a small visual arts magazine in New York, New Observations, which was a nonprofit organization committed to bringing young and lesser-known artists into the limelight.

I wrote "Secret Lives of Turtles and Tortoises", an ebook focused primarily on Sonoran Desert turtle and tortoise species. The book incorporates photographs I created of my animals, and humorous observations of their behaviors, including interactions with one another, or other species.

My art is an exploration of the intersection of my passions: animals, and art. Both deeply inspire me. I have a particular fascination for desert tortoises and desert box turtles, often focusing on their intriguing lives in my work. In a fluid rhythm, I photograph and draw them, after which these images find their way into paintings which are amalgams of physical drawings, physical paintings, and sometimes digital paintings, as well. The final form may be a painting on canvas or claybord, or digital image realized on paper, metal or canvas.

Painting makes my heart sing. Each painting I embark on is a journey with an unclear destination, which starts with a ground painting created through improvisation, and a drawing which I transform into an image on that ground. Alternatively, that drawing is instead transformed into a digital painting, often incorporating photographs of my physical paintings in the image. In either case, the process requires that I am fully present to experience what is unfolding in front of me, so I can respond in a way that I find joyous. The occasional happy accident leads to new discoveries, as I re-envision the painting I'm creating in front of me.

Hi! Thanks for stopping to look at my work. I'm a professional artist who creates paintings, drawings and photographs. My studio is located in the Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona.

Archival and non-archival prints are available. I use only the highest quality archival inks and paper to create my archival ultrachrome prints. This combination of ink and paper has been lab tested and found to last 82-200 years depending on display/storage methods. Non-archival prints are created on premium photo paper.

To maximize longevity, all original art and prints are best displayed out of direct sunlight, in cool temperatures.
