An Irrepressible Love of Making Adornment
I've always loved to make things. I started sewing in junior high school and eventually majored in Fashion Design at the California College of Arts (and Crafts) in San Francisco. I've had stints as a costume designer for a ballet company, a seamstress in a haunted costume shop and an art instructor at a sleep-away camp where I swear, every 80s camp movie cliche came to life. Over the years, my passion for making clothes morphed into a love of making jewelry.
I LOVE big jewelry. But after years of wearing huge, heavy earrings, I realized that unless I wanted earlobe reconstruction surgery at 40, I needed to find an alternative to weighty earrings. I discovered the versatility of leather and a decade later, I'm still inspired by the material. Leather can be pure color or pure texture. It's light weight, easy to work with, and continuously inspiring.
I originally used only recycled leather. I'd troll thrift stores looking for leather mini skirts and leather jackets in unusual colors to take home and cut into earrings. I still use some re-purposed leather but I also order leather from a company that processes their leather in the U.S. using only by-products from the food industry.
In 2004, I made my first pair of leather feather earrings for myself as an experiment. I made a few more pairs for friends as gifts and eventually wound up creating a business out of leather jewelry. Every item in my shop was made by me. I work out of a sweet little studio behind my house where I hand-cut every item and hand paint every feather.
