50 Years As A Potter
Both my home & my chosen craft & profession have reflected my love of the earth & the creative energy it provides. I opened my first shop in 1972 after two years of study & an apprenticeship with Harry Holl, owner of Scargo Stoneware Pottery, in Dennis. MA. I returned to my hometown in Tucson, AZ & opened shop, naming my business Sabino Stoneware Pottery. I found an adobe rental near downtown in Barrio Viejo which was condemned. I negotiated a lease with the owner (for 2 years at $52.50/month) in exchange for un-condeming the building. Twenty years later, I bought & moved into another fix-up adobe which I restored & where I lived & worked for another 20 years. I am now in my third location West of the University of Arizona, 1019 N. Jacobus Avenue, an old adobe of course. I live & work here which is the best case scenario for a potter; as monitoring the drying is essential. I built a beautiful studio, gallery, & outdoor gallery using many materials from my previous historic adobe which was demolished for student housing. I could remove "anything but the dirt" & did; saguaro ribs, doors, stained glass, ceiling fans, lighting, basalt, crown molding & brick. I've incorporated so much of my beloved previous studio & home that many longterm customers comment "this place reminds us of your old house" & there's a reason they notice. Please, if in Tucson, drop by & see for yourself, I would love to meet you.
