GENERAL ANTIQUITIES, ANCIENT ART & ANCIENT HISTORY RESOURCES

http://www.finds.org.uk/
The site has been updated. It is now much easier to use and includes half a million objects, ranging from Neolithic to post-Medieval antiquities. Especially helpful in the database section is the use of “controlled vocabulary” that assists visitors in utilizing the correct search terms to find the types of objects of interest to them. The U.K.'s Portable Antiquities Scheme offers the most rational solution to issues of national patrimony and the antiquities trade.

This includes a broad range of archaeological research resources, publications, websites, etc. worldwide but with plenty of Classical, Near Eastern and Egyptian links. Potentially very useful.

Perhaps best known in the U.S. for having written and presented a number of documentaries for television including Helen of Troy, which was widely shown on Public TV, Bettany Hughes lectures throughout the world and has been awarded a Research Fellowship at King's London, was invited to re-open the new Ashmolean Museum, Oxford after its 61 million pound re-design, and was given a Special Award for Services to Hellenic Culture and Heritage by the Greek state. Her website is a great resource for those with an interest in classical archaeology, art and history.

Here is a superb website, in German, dealing with efforts to recreate Roman glass, including the original technologies used. Very well illustrated

www.staffordshirehoard.org.uk
A fascinating site following the cleaning, conservation and study of what has proven to be the most spectacular archaeological discovery in England in many years. Pages dealing with the discovery of the hoard, its historical context, and materials used, as well excellent photo galleries, help bring this mysterious find more clearly into focus.
www.stonepages.com

Frequently asked questions

I have some items I think may be ancient. Can you help me identify and value them?

Authentication and identification are the key elements in building a collection of ancient art. We at Clio Ancient Art are often contacted by private owners and museums wishing to identify objects and learn if the they are genuine ancient artifacts, reproductions, fakes, forgeries, or tourist trinkets. As a service to antiquities collectors and owners, Clio Ancient Art provides authentication and identification services. For a fee of $50.00 per hour or portion thereof, we will review your quality digital images or examine your objects in person, and inform you in writing as to the precise nature of the objects you own, their origin, place and time of manufacture, potential value, etc.

Where can I learn more about antiquities and ancient art?

We've recently begun a series of videos dealing with antiquities identification, authentication, provenance and more.

Why collect antiquities?

We live in a world obsessed with change, constantly reinventing itself. But for most of human history change occurred slowly and this was especially true of art. Only rarely, as with Greek vase painting, did styles evolve rapidly. Holding an antiquity and feeling a human connection to its maker, can help ground us, briefly silence the din of modern life and put in perspective our own place in time. We sometimes draw a distinction between antiquities and ancient art because of our modern perception of what art is and how we perceive the past. Many items we offer were never intended to be viewed as "art" but served a utilitarian purpose "Art" is an appellation we have ascribed to them in reverence to their age and rarity.

Why did you choose the name "Clio?:

Clio is the Muse of History in Classical mythology and thus appropriate here. The Muses were companions of the Greek god Apollo. Originally deities associated with sacred springs, their number and functions changed over time but in the Classical era it was finally determined there were nine Muses, each with her own unique character. Clio, whose name means "the proclaimer," is most often depicted in Greek and Roman art with her attributes, the trumpet and clepsydra (a device for measuring time).
