About

Coach Street Clay has a focus in studio pottery made by Kate Symonds.

Coach Street Clay's Etsy Shop is an extension of a small business that is located in downtown Canandaigua, New York. This Shop Story is about CSC's studio & gallery and owner Kate Symonds. CSC is a unique gathering place for a growing collective of those who appreciate art, craft and community through the medium of ceramics.

The gallery has a focus in studio ceramics while jewelry, painting and sculpture complete the collection culminating in an aesthetic that is distinct to Canandaigua and the Finger Lakes. Special exhibits and events, including public artist lectures are held throughout the year showcasing a variety of artists, small workshops and ceramic lessons for all ages.

Coach Street Clay is the home of Kate Symonds’ working ceramic studio equipped with 8 potters wheels, 3 electric kilns, and a glaze lab. The building that is CSC underwent almost 3 years of renovations during 2008-2010 that resurrected what was a dilapidated old barn into a charming studio, gallery and apartment. Efforts were made to retain the historic imperfections and character of the building. With reclaimed barn wood walls, old beams, a beautifully restored front door, reclaimed wood trim, and red rough sawn siding. The building still maintains the same footprint and the original facade structure with a small addition to the second floor. The renovations were a labor of love for Kate and her family with the expertise of her father, master carpenter, Dwight Symonds.

The building at 39 Coach Street had previously served as a carriage house in the turn of the last century for a home on the next street south. It has housed many business over the years including an overhead garage door business, porcelain dentures business, and a carpet showroom.

Today CSC is a wonderful addition to the growing art community in Canandaigua. The welcoming nature of the space is evident upon entering. Come into the realm of handmade quality and share in the life of the maker at Coach Street Clay.
