A typical workspace while carving a linoleum print: carving tools, linoleum plate, reference image, and more.

After the linoleum is carved, ink is spread on the plate using a roller. Then the image is transferred onto the paper.

I Print Therefore I Am
The phrase cogito ergo sum, attributed to French philosopher Rene Descartes, is Latin for “I think, therefore I am.” As radical skeptics, we at Cogito Prints know that we may doubt everything—who we are, what we are, why we are—but, as long as we are printing, the one thing that is indisputable is that we are. All of our products are entirely handmade with care and a sense of existential angst.
Our preferred mediums are linoleum relief printing, rubber stamping, and painting with acrylic and watercolor. Our process of linoleum printing involves carving an image into the surface of a linoleum plate, rolling oil-based ink onto the carved surface, then using a wooden spoon or rolling pin to burnish the ink onto paper. Rubber stamping involves a similar process using carved rubber, though the blocks are typically smaller and dabbed onto ink pads.
Our goal is to make art relevant, functional and accessible. Our designs are imbued with our real, honest emotions—the things that wake us up in the morning and that keep us up at night. Art is about expression and exchange—our hope is that you enjoy our prints, but also see the world just a little differently afterward. We welcome all feedback, open dialogs and random comments.
