Announcement    Hello Fellow Crafters!

Update: October 2020

Arya is settling in! She's growing every day and is being thoroughly spoilt by everyone here. Strangely (for a kitty) she doesn't seem to be interested in trying to get into the studio. I myself (the allergy-sufferer) am not having any problems, even when she sleeps on my pillow. Yes, she totally sleeps on my pillow. It's adorable.

Update: September 2020

WE HAVE A KITTEN!

Her name is Arya and she's a purebred Siberian. We've been waiting for her for quite a while!

Siberians are known to be low-allergen producing and in fact the allergen levels in their saliva can be tested and measured. Arya tested very low and she doesn't set off my allergies. I am normally *very* allergic to cats/dogs, dust and smoke. But I've been with Arya 24/7 for the past week and no issues. THIS IS AMAZING.

This also means that any accidental traces of fur on our items should not set off allergies for most others, either. But just in case, Arya's living space is completely separate and closed off from the Conscious Elegance studio.

See below for a photo of our new family member. We look forward to enjoying both Arya and Conscious Elegance!

Friends outside of the US - please message us before purchasing so that we can explore additional (and less expensive) shipping options. We want to help where ever we can!

Friends in the EU - in accordance with EU's 'European Union Directive on Consumer Rights', we will accept returns if requested within 14 days of receipt. Please contact us for details or to initiate a return.

We continue to work at home, masking and maintaining social distance when out and about, and none of us has been sick yet (hurrah!). Mask design experimenting continues.

So long as we are well and not concerned of exposure risk, we will keep the shop open in support (and solidarity) with everyone out there who would love to have projects to work on. And so long as we can post out packages while keeping pro-actively isolated, we will continue to do so. Our mail carrier is very understanding!

Wishing everyone luck and fortitude - we're in this together.

Looking for larger amounts of fabric for larger projects? While we are not restocking our hempsilk yardage, we still have a good supply of wedding dress prototypes in hempsilk, vintage silk and reclaimed fabrics. Several of them have large full skirts and wide panels and they come in many long-ago discontinued colors. Ping us if you have an idea and we'll be glad to work with you.

NOTE: if you'd like to try your hand at making masks or headbands from hempsilk, we'd be happy to donate reclaimed fabric in the form of these dress prototypes. Let us know if you'd like to try and what colors you'd be interested in.

Welcome to Conscious Elegance!

We're Crafty Makers who love reclaimed and vintage pretties, sustainably-produced hemp and silk fabric, organic cottons, sewing aids, vintage wedding dresses & other fun creations of our own. We want to make a better world with the world we've got and we can do that without consuming more resources. We aim to take what might be unloved and transform it into something fabulous.

Lead-time for orders:
1-2 business days for in-stock fabric and finished vintage items
2-4 weeks for custom made to order items which use in-stock fabric

You can expect to receive a personal confirmation of your order within a few hours unless Something Weird is going on. If we know about the Weird in advance, we'll announce it or put the shop on hiatus so people are clued in.

We make mindful packaging a priority and we use recycled packing materials whenever possible. Expect interesting boxes!

If you're curious about what folks have to say about ordering from us, peruse our reviews. We're grateful for their candor and honesty. https://www.etsy.com/your/shops/ConsciousElegance/reviews

Please see our Polices for more details. We'd love to help you make your project utterly fabulous!

Fabulous Hemp and Silk Fabrics, Vintage (Reclaimed) and Sustainably Created Products!

Our Mission: To Be the Change

We offer beautiful fabrics, fun vintage items (most of them reclaimed!) and we create fabulous handmade pretties for a fair price. Sustainability, social responsibility, & affordability are our priorities and reflected in every aspect of our business. We partner with our clients to honor their values & give truly exceptional service.

At Conscious Elegance we are committed to creating Safe Space and strongly believe that everyone should have the right to self-identity, gender expression and sexual preference. We welcome clients of all genders and expressions.

You might have noticed that we've added a new badge to our listings. We have joined 'The Ethical Move' and we pledge to take a stand for an ethical marketplace. To do this, we aim to break the cycle of manipulative pricing and empower conscious consumers by creating a new standard for marketing based on trust and honesty. See https://www.theethicalmove.org/ for more details.

Green and Sustainable

Our business espouses Zero Waste Principles. We use exclusively 100% certified organic cottons, pesticide-free hempsilk blends, and reclaimed materials in our projects and we're happy to offer our materials by the yard to fellow artists and crafters. We offer new fabric options with the highest percentage of plant fiber that we can find, to be kindest to our fellow fauna. We use certified organic cotton thread in all of our in-house constructed garments (that's rare, even in eco-friendly products) and our private label is sewn on certified organic cotton. Our products are individually created in private studios, by fiber artists who are living their Dream.

Making a Stand

Back in 2006, I started a dress business when my beautiful friend, who had been shopping in traditional wedding boutiques, was made to feel like she did not have the right to have a gorgeous wedding dress because of her body shape. She literally cried on my shoulder for an hour and I decided right then and there that I would create the most fabulous dress ever for her. We made exactly what she wanted and she was ecstatic. Her happiness informed my choice to offer this service to anyone and everyone.

Since then, I've moved onto other artistic endeavors but am still passionate about empowering others to create the world they want to live in. I do this by offering sustainably-sourced fabric and supplies as well as my own creations.

Although we've taken a public stand on our support for models of all sizes, I hadn't until now spoken out on body-shaming issues on this site or on our website, out of respect for my friend's privacy. With her permission, it is time to come forward. Our studio is a Safe Space and there will be no shaming of any kind; every body is beautiful and deserves respect.

Obligatory Happy Talk:

*We were awarded 'Green Business of the Year' by the North Tyneside Council's Environmental Agency

*In past years we were spotlighted by ShoestringVenture.com, which highlights small businesses and tells their story with the hope of inspiring other entrepreneurs.

*We are also included on the website JustDoYourDream.com which focuses on people who are following their heart's desire. (Actual page: http://justdoyourdream.com/lori-del-genis-dress-designer/)

*We're active in local action groups and we educate the community about sustainable fabrics and by donating our scrap fabric to local schools to foster their creativity.

*One of our sustainable dress designs was on exhibit at the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, Mass. That was admittedly *very* cool.

Our dresses and crafts are created in the USA by local artists who are paid a fair living wage and a percentage of our profits is donated annually to environmental causes.

THE STORY OF OUR HEMP FABRIC

Purchase this fabric knowing you are making a difference!

Our hempsilks are made from tussah (wild) silk and hemp raised as a companion crop without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The silkworms are not harmed but are allowed to exit their cocoons naturally and continue on with their lives. Farmers are able to send their kids to school since hemp demand is increased. Farm and mill workers are paid a fair wage for their work, receive benefits, and have a significant amount of say about their jobs.

The tops of the hemp plants are natural insect repellents and the farmers re-claim the plant-tops after harvest to ward off pests in their silos. Because it's so supportive to its fellow plants, hemp is used as a companion crop to just about everything!

Thanks for stopping by!!

Frequently asked questions
How are you mimizing COVID risks?

We are very serious about keeping ourselves and our customers safe. Every human household member is able to work full-time from home. Although no one in our household has been sick, we've been isolating in effect since mid-March. We wear masks 100% of the time when outside of the house and we observe full hand-washing and disinfecting protocols.

As mentioned above in the shop description, our home studio is completely separated from the rest of the house (and from our kitten Arya) and our post is collected regularly, contact-free, from our porch.

Care instructions

For hempsilk fabrics and organic cotton items:

* Launder with natural soap by hand or gentle machine wash, drip dry
* Iron while still damp. The hemp blends are incredibly durable!
* Press with a very hot iron; using steam works wonders!

NOTE: a hot iron means "as hot as your iron will go". Seriously, it's really difficult to damage the hempsilk fabric, despite its silk content - you may be surprised at how hot an iron it can take. I know *we* were!

Like other natural fabrics, hempsilks will 'heather', i.e. soften and become more textured with each washing (think 'flannel sheets').

We suggest that you experiment with a small scrap before pressing or laundering. If you'd like an extra scrap with your order at no charge, just ask!

Sizing details

Some of our items have unexpected sizing (like wedding dresses!). We'll do our best to give clear measurements along with any label sizes to help make things as accurate as possible. Usually we measure sizing on sewing mannequins. Please ask if you have any questions!

How quickly can you ship items?

Since we keep all of our listed items in our studio, we can send them out immediately, usually within 1-3 business days.

Sometimes we'll want to take the extra time to prepare your order carefully (if so we'll make sure it's ok with you). And if there's an unavoidable delay, we'll let you know right away!

How do you ship sewing patterns?

We offer Free Shipping for sewing patterns! We send our patterns out in a padded envelope via USPS First-Class when sent within the US. We ask our friends outside of the US to contact us for a shipping estimate.

Is your studio pet dander and smoke free?

Absolutely. Minimal allergens is important to us. Our workspace is also hard-wood floored to minimize dust bunnies. And we sweep a lot. :)

Do you accept installment payments and lay-away?

Yes, we do! Message us and we'll set up a plan that works for you!

How can you call your shop eco-friendly when you offer silk products?

Exellent question! The vintage silk dresses we offer are reclaimed and many are pre-loved. Re-using items saves further harm to animals and resources.

The hempsilk fabric we offer uses 'kind silk' that was collected after the silkworms naturally exited their cocoons, while hemp itself is an incredibly eco-supportive crop.

We believe that by focusing on natural and reclaimed materials that have many years left of useful life, we are supporting the earth and honoring the resources that went into creating our products.

How do you actually measure your garments?

We take our measurements on vintage adjustable dress forms to try to get the most accurate numbers.

We're aware that dress form measurements can run slightly larger than numbers taken on a real body (real people squoosh, dress forms don't) and in that way we know we're erring on the side of caution - your garment will fit much better!

What sort of packaging to you use? Do you use plastic?

We ship orders in reclaimed packaging (including reclaimed plastic) with the aim to consume minimal new materials. Don't be surprised if you get a box with a different branding on it!

The one new material we sometimes use for shipping: bio-degradable plastic bags for wrapping our fabric. These break down quickly into harmless particles when exposed to microbes such as in a compost bin or landfill. We believe that this wrapping is an eco-supportive option along with reclaimed plastic.

Last year, we were informed that a fabric order arrived damaged in transit. While this has happened only rarely, we now add another layer to our fabric packaging for extra protection. And no reports of damage since!
