About

Doing What I Love ~

I started off as a munchkin with an artist as a mother. She taught me everything she could and always encouraged experimentation, inquisitive thinking, and exploring. Her theory was: use as much white paper as you need. If your art is just putting one tiny dot on that paper, that's fine - because that's what you wanted to do. Just draw. Draw until you're bored, then go find something /new/ to draw because God's creation is packed with beautiful things!

Most of my ambitions can be traced back to my mother's own inquisitive disposition. I attended a community college where I studied art. Yup, just art. Not "Fine Art", not "Graphic Art", no strings attached. My degree is literally "Art"; and that's the way I like it.

I don't believe any artist should define themselves by any one specific media, style, or subject because a truly creative person will continue to create new things and desire change. Because of this, I myself, try not to limit the definition of my art. There should be no limit to creative ambitions. The God who made the baby seal is the God who also made the rhinoceros. So why not add a little variety every now and then? It keeps things interesting.

Some kind of artist statement from me... I enjoy twisting the idea of "Good Composition". You've all seen the classic - "I took a bunch of fruit, wiped them all off, made sure they were perfect, placed them in an impeccable bowl, then painted this glorious, realistic still life". Is that realistic? That's NOT what I see in real life. I see a fruit with a big brown spot and a sticker attached to it. When turned the right way, that bowl has a chip in it. And the background... it's actually my kitchen counter, and there are still bread crumbs hanging out. Is it still a beautiful setting? By all means! My artist statement includes the idea that real life as it is can be compositionally confounding. I attempt to capture these juxtapositions within my compositions.

Currently, my favorite mediums include marker, charcoal, graphite, ball point pen, india ink, intaglio, and oil paints. Although, I'm always up for a challenge or something new.

I've been experimenting with chalk pastels, watercolors, and making hair bows.

I'm a young, aspiring Illustrator from Illinois. I'm also a chocolate cobbler - that is, I make chocolate shoes at a small, family owned candy store. God has blessed me with both a metaphorically sweet and literally sweet life.
