About

The story of Portable Fortitude

The story of this deck begins with crisis.

I spent the summer of 2007 traveling in southern Africa. I came home severely ill and thinking about the people I'd lived with, about mutual aid, about structures that prey on illness and poverty, about cultural myths that make certain kinds of suffering seem normal.

Back home in Philadelphia, my friends were facing problems that were similarly complex. As I tried to get diagnosed and treated I spent many days flat on my back, overwhelmed by all of the hard things. In my delirium and anxiety, I began to dream of protective talismans. I was thinking both of Frida Kahlo's retablos and the necklaces my mother used to give me as symbolic armor when I was afraid to go to school.

I drew a dozen protective images, fairly quickly, and pasted them on the faces of playing cards I'd picked up on city sidewalks. I gave these to my friends at my 30th birthday party--and they insisted that I draw a full deck. I kept at it slowly, while working several jobs and continuing to struggle with my health. Three years later, I'd finished Portable Fortitude.

Publishing the deck has changed my life. It's an incredible feeling to have made something so useful to so many people. I've been humbled and grateful to hear the stories of what people use if for--rituals, writing prompts, tattoos, divination--and how it's come into their lives.

I will fully refund or exchange any item that you are not satisfied with, for whatever reason, to the best of my ability. I can't be responsible for mail that is lost or damaged by the post office after it leaves my hands, but I try to work something out with the customer when this happens (it happens rarely, but it does happen).

Frequently asked questions

Wholesale availability

I do sell wholesale to retailers across the US and abroad! Contact me at corinadrossartwork@gmail.com for details.

Can I commission a drawing from you?

Because of a demanding schedule, I'm usually not available for custom art. If this changes, I'll update this FAQ!

Can I get your art as a tattoo on me?

Yes! Just send me a photo of the result for me to proudly post!

Can I use your art for another purpose?

I'll often approve uses of my art for non-profit ventures or social activism fundraising, as long as I'm credited. No one has permission to use my art for anything they'll be making money off of.

Can I get a patch in a different size or color?

Sorry, but no. I have my patches made in bulk and the screen is only one size. What you see here is what I have available.

Can I get an particular image as a patch/poster/magnet?

Possibly. If enough people ask me for a certain image in a new format (like the Prince poster as a t-shirt), I'll consider making it. But it does depend on a lot of other factors (like right now I don't have the space to store t-shirts).

Aren't you also an astrologer?

Yes! You can check out my other site here: flaxandgold.com
