OUR STORY

My husband and I started designing messenger bags for ourselves in 1986 when we were bicycle couriers and couldn't find a truly durable, ergonomic messenger bag on the market. All of the variations in this catalog are derived from our first messenger bag: the Original Cambridge Courier Bag. We tested the first bags ourselves and then quickly found there was not only a demand from other couriers, but that anyone can use a comfortable, weatherproof bag that doesn't wear out.

Our designs reflect our commitment to make the highest quality, most durable, ergonomic messenger bag that we can.

OUR BUSINESS

The first five years of our business ran side by side with our courier business, Cambridge Bicycle Couriers. Our first store opened in a drafty garage in 1987 on a side street that few could find. We had a brick and mortar store in Cambridge for 15 years and now, First in Cambridgeport, then near Central Square and finally in Harvard Square. 25 years later, we sell exclusively from this web site and from our store/workshop in Randolph, Vermont. We still make every bag ourselves as we have always sold direct (rather than wholesaling to stores) to insure high quality and to avoid outsourcing.

The predominant business model we now see in our world is one of unchecked growth and outsourcing to increase profit with investors dictating the course of business. The outcome: businesses that do not answer to anyone or the environment with massive production of disposable goods that end up in landfills with no one to be held accountable.

This is not our way. We believe that small right-sized businesses engender business ethics we can all live with.
