Vintage, thrifted & deadstock fabric & notions for the sustainable sewist

I started Craft & Thrift in December 2017 as an outlet for my creative energy and for the thrill of starting a business. As an environmentalist at heart, I wanted my business to be helping to recycle old, unloved items languishing in thrift stores, car boot sales and charity shops. Initially I sold vintage accessories but soon branched out into haberdashery and found my true home in fabrics and notions.

I love salvaging old fabrics - velvet and vintage curtain material makes for beautiful jackets and thick upholstery weight off cuts make lovely sturdy tote bags.

Chunky metal vintage zippers, shiny brass military buttons and old darning thread in beautifully illustrated packaging are collected from various places and grouped together in curated sets, waiting for my fellow sewists and knitters to scoop them up for their projects.

I currently work from my little Hobbit Hole of a flat, in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland. Picturesque Dean Village is a World Heritage Site that harks back to bygone times and I love the short walk along the river to my favourite haunts for thrifting. My rescued dogs, Badger and Daisy, keep me company as I sew, watching with a beady eye from the sofa.

Frequently asked questions
Gift wrapping and packaging

Standard packaging:
I use 100% recyclable and plastic free packaging!
This is made up of paper packaging with paper-based tape. This means the items are thoroughly wrapped and protected for shipping but not appropriate for presentation as a gift.

Sizing details

Each listing will have the measurements of the main body of the fabric. There may be extra fabric attached to the main body e.g. from previous cuttings, irregular edges etc. I always ensure to measure in such a way that you will receive more fabric than listed, not less. The nature of vintage, thrifted and deadstock fabric means it sometimes has prior cuts or fabric removed from it. Where possible, this is described in the listing.
If you are not happy with the amount of fabric received or find damage that I have somehow missed (we're all human after all!) please don't hesitate to contact me and allow me to make it right.

Care instructions

My fabrics come with suggested washing instructions, based on the most likely fibre content of the material. I would always encourage my fellow sewists to prewash their fabric to ensure you know how the fabric will respond to your method of cleaning. I can't be held responsible for any material that shrinks in the wash, the nature of vintage material means I can't always guarantee the fibre content. If in doubt, wash a small swatch to see how it responds before washing the whole piece of fabric.
I would always advise cold hand wash or dry clean only for silks and wools.

Shipping to the UK

I use a combination of Royal Mail Signed For 1st or 2nd Class and DHL Express, depending on the weight of your order. I make around one storage unit trip a week to collect fabric, meaning orders can take 1-2wks after I've received them to ship. Generally this is faster but I like to be realistic with my customers about turnaround times. I'm a one-person biz, not Amazon Prime so please be gentle with me!
Any orders over £100 ship for free.

Shipping outwith the UK

US/Canada - I am using DHL Express for international shipping, a contactless, door-to-door shipping service. Parcels are tracked throughout their journey, minimising the risk of packages being delayed or lost.
I am not responsible for any customs taxes, VAT or import duties payable on receipt of your item.

Europe - Shipping is set with the assumption of an order of more than 2kg, if your order comes to less than 2kg I will refund you any additional shipping paid, minus £3 for consumables and parcel collection. I may need to send your order in two consignments or via courier, depending on the size.
You are responsible for paying customs duty, VAT or import tax on your order.

Fibre content

The nature of vintage and deadstock fabric means it very rarely comes with a fibre content label attached! As such, I rely on information from my fabric sources, burn test results and my own experience to determine the fibre content of each piece of fabric. I can't always be 100% sure of the accuracy of this and this is part of the nature of buying deadstock!
I will always endeavour to describe my fabric as accurately as possible and if you have any questions either before or after purchasing, please don't hesitate to ask.

Colours of fabrics

I do my best to accurately capture the colours of my fabrics but unfortunately there are sometimes discrepancies between monitors and eyeballs!
I provide photos, videos AND descriptions of all my fabrics, PLEASE look at all of these before purchasing! I've had a number of complaints that could have been avoided had the person looked at all the pictures and read the full description.
If you feel that the fabric you've received is significantly different to the colour you thought you were buying, please contact me and I'll make it right for you. This will take the form of either a credit note (including a discount code for 15%) or a refund for the fabric and original shipping and I will organise a DHL collection to return the fabric.

Samples or swatches

I offer swatches on any fabric with over 5 metres stock! Just select the drop down menu in the listing to check the number of metres available.
You can check out the swatch listing by searching 'swatch' in the shop.
Unfortunately I can't do swatches on any listing under 5 metres as it would negatively affect the amount of stock available for the final customer and there is a chance it will sell out before you come back to buy!
Swatches cost a nominal £1 per fabric plus a standard £3 for shipping. Just select the number of swatches you require from the drop down menu and then message me with the URL for the specific listings you require. Easy!
