TIPS FOR FINISHING WOOD CRAFTS:

Here are a few tips to help you in finishing your wood crafts whether hardwood or plywood. These are some techniques I have used. Experiment and see what works best for you.

• For lettering on wood, especially plywood, spray with a clear coating FIRST. This will keep the ink from bleeding. A Sharpie pen will definitely bleed on raw plywood (not so much on hardwood). DO NOT apply the spray AFTER using a Sharpie on plywood. It will cause it to bleed again. Krylon makes good, non-yellowing products, but there are other brands to choose from. My favorite pens for lettering are Pigma Micron pen by Sakura. These pens are available in many colors and point sizes. The ink is waterproof and will not fade. Gel pens such as Paper Mate can also be used.

• Painting wood with acrylic water based paint will “raise the grain” of the wood causing it to feel a little fuzzy. To achieve a smooth finish, apply the first coat of paint, let dry and lightly sand using VERY FINE sandpaper. You can even “sand” them using a piece torn from a brown paper bag or a small piece of cardboard if you don’t have sandpaper handy. Wipe with a tack cloth to remove the dust. If you don’t have a tack cloth, just wipe them clean with a lint free cloth very slightly dampened. Apply another coat of paint if necessary and let dry. If you use glitter paint, then you won’t need to sand or varnish. You can also use acrylic enamel paint.

• The color of raw wood is very pretty without painting or staining. If you want to leave the natural color, then spray with a clear sealer, sand lightly and spray again.

• If you are staining the pieces and have achieved the color you want with the first coat, then it’s not necessary to stain again. Just sand lightly and wipe with a lint free cloth slightly dampened.

• Finish your painted or stained pieces with one or two light coats of clear spray sealer. Use glossy if you like or for a soft, non-glossy finish use a matte or satin spray.

About

The scent of wood.

Back as far as I can remember I have always enjoyed crafting of any kind and took every class offered in the small village where I grew up. I never missed vacation bible school in the summer because I couldn't wait to see what crafting activities were in store. My first painting on glass was at 9 years of age. Please check out my glass painting Etsy shop paintingbyelaine.etsy.com. Much later I discovered my fondness for painting on wood. I received an award back in the corporate world (which paid the bills) and with the money received, I bought my first band saw and the rest is history.

Last December I was very pleased that a designer from Better Homes & Gardens magazine purchased some of my products and wood burned them for the May 2018 issue. I have included the picture. She did a great job and I'm very proud to share this with you.
