About

The Birth of a New Beginning

Once upon a time, back when I was young and impressionable, my mother was a professional seamstress specializing in bridal out of our home. Of course, as a child, I never thought I would follow somewhat in my mother’s footsteps, but fate has a special way of making things happen. From Kindergarten through fall semester in Freshman year of college, I was adamant I would be a teacher. After fall semester, things fell through and I soon set my eyes on Theatre: Design/Technical Theatre emphasis since I had a love for costuming.

This love for costuming really began when I was young and my mother made several of my Halloween costumes, but I also like to attribute a time in 2001 when a good friend of mine introduced me to the world of Japanese anime and manga, starting with Sailor Moon. Fast forward to 2006 and I learned about things called anime conventions, eventually planning for my first one in Rosemont, IL for Anime Central. Actual attendance of the convention was in 2007 and I also bought my first cosplay for the event (rather than create it due to time constraint and ability – mom had other obligations and could not help me). Was not the best, but we all have a start somewhere!

As the years continued, I loved cosplaying more and more, but I ran into the problem of creating said outfits. While nowadays you can find cosplay patterns in Simplicity/McCalls/Butterick/Etc, they were not available when I made my first cosplay. Mom had to help me with manipulating patterns to create the look I wanted (somewhat of a grueling process when you don’t understand the mechanics of a pattern and mom had a hard time explaining them to me). At the time, I was taking a Japanese class where one of my classmates told me about Mount Mary College (now relabeled as Mount Mary University) which had a fashion degree program. Immediately I became interested and got the ball rolling to transfer from my Theatre major at UW-Green Bay to the Fashion program at Mount Mary.

After 3 years of study I was able to receive my Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design in 2014. In order to graduate, however, I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Florence, Italy through a Study Abroad Italy program to learn how to make shoes (super fun, by the way!) In the fall semester of 2014, I also attended Northeast Wisconsin Technical College to obtain a Certificate in Entrepreneurship.

The creation of this store is nestled in the middle of all of this. It was in June of 2012 that Crimson Star Emporium came to be, with an emphasis in alternative design. It was borne out of revamping and rebranding from my first etsy store in 2009 under K.Lou-Nockturne. My wares started small and confined to accessories (since dorm life is not something that allows for storage of large items) but slowly I am expanding. I’ve attended several conventions in both Artist Alley and Vendor Hall since then, and I continue to gain more experience and knowledge with each show.

I love what I do. I love to create. Thank you for reading my story, and thank you for your support!

P.S. As a heads up: 2017 will not be probably as productive year as usual. While I will be officially married October 13, 2016, the big ceremony and reception will be in October 2017 so there will be -lots- of planning to accomplish. I have many plans for CSE in 2018 though! <3
