Beautiful colours and arrived fast. It also holds my straight, slippery hair up well which I was pleasantly surprised by as sticks often fall straight out!

Humble beginnings and still humble

My husband and I purchased a picture frame business a few years ago with hopes to build an income for our retirement. The business came with a Barnes Velocipede Scroll Saw No. 2 reproduction peddle scroll saw and I became immediately addicted.

I discovered the love of making hair toys, while making something for myself that would hold up my baby fine, very slick hair up out of the equipment. Store bought plastics snagged, and did not work. Elastic holders had more of my hair on them than I had on my head. Thus, the claw was born because of how well it held.

At one point we were in dire financial straights trying to support ourselves and 16 pets with very little paying work where we live in Arkansas. I attempted to list some hair toys to try to at least help pay for pet food and medication.

We had to temporarily relocate to Houston TX for work, and left most of our wood business behind. We brought enough to keep my hair toy addiction going in hopes of growing the business. As we work our jobs and get ever closer to our goals, we keep growing our wood business in our “off time”.

WE ARE A BIT DIFFERENT AND TAKE A LOT OF RISKS

We don’t claim to be master woodworkers or have any titles or extensive background in woodworking. We like following our creative pulls and enjoy trying new stuff. We still have a lot to learn and do so by “stepping out on a limb”, pun intended.

Most woodworkers purchase high grade “clean” wood with not blemishes, knots, cracks etc. in it. We are the opposite. We like wood with lots of character, grain, spalting, color and so on. We like to experiment with different wood as well. A lot of our wood comes from our home property in Arkansas. We have 60 some acres of forested land in the Ozarks. Our wood comes from dead fall and damage from the 2009 ice storm that downed about 1/3 of our trees which includes: red cedar, black walnut, flowering dogwood, hickory, sycamore, red oak. Most of the spalted woods were found while we were cutting firewood.

The risks are that the spalted and downed woods have a lot of risky areas. We do a lot of stabilizing of the wood before really working with it. Sometimes it is not enough, and issues might rise after lots of handling. We back up our products because of these risks in our policies.

AS WE GROW

We have started to slowly integrate picture frames back into stock, my husband has designed some wood four poster pet beds, and I will be slowly returning to my other obsession of doll-house miniatures and wood kitchen utensils, as time allows around our jobs. If we return to Arkansas these plans for the future and more will go full bore and we will be hitting the road from time to time to do shows.

Thank you for shopping with us. Please ask if you have any questions prior to purchase. Be sure to check our "about us" page and take time to read our policies on shipping, returns etc. below. Follow us on our Facebook page for coupons and sometimes, pre-sale deals.

For now we are a "one person operation". Due to work constraints my husband may help when he can. Please have patience as we are preparing to re-locate.

Wood - We like experimenting and working with uncommon and spalted wood. Extra care needs to be taken with spalted wood, but we also understand it can be unpredictable and will take care of any problems you have with it.

About the knots, bore holes, trails etc. - We treat most knots to keep from falling out with time. Most knots have tiny hair line fractures that generally radiate out from the center, not all do. There may be tiny hairline fractures along the grain as well. These are treated as well to help prevent creeping fractures. It also hardens the edges to keep smooth and prevent splintering. These is a natural occurrences in the wood, and why we use wood that has unique characteristics. If anything concerns you by all means contact us. We know it is risky to use wood like this, but, it's so beautiful. Most of the time we will note unique fissures, bore holes, trails etc in our listings. We will repair or fix should a problem arise with normal wear.

Resin - This has been discontinued.

Acrylics - Please see our other shops

We do our best to insure your item won't break with normal use, it goes through quite a bit during processing, and is tested several times prior to finishing. Things do happen though, all wood is not created equal, and we can not see inside the wood for week spots or tiny cracks. WOOD WILL BREAK, CHIP OR WEAKEN IF DROPPED, PLACED LOOSE IN PURSES (ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE FULL LIKE MINE), OR FORCED into hair. Some wood types are very strong while others are fragile, feel free to check with us on any recommendations per your use.

Check our blog on sizing information or shoot me an email. Exchanges only on sizing issues with an additional postage fee.
