Announcement    As each Guardian is packed up and leaves my studio, I imagine them flying across the country and arriving to live in their new homes. It is fun to imagine them in so many different places. I hope they bring joy, wherever they land.

Each morning I awake with a mix of emotions. Grateful for where I live but also mourning the loss of seeing loved ones, being out in the world and showing my artwork at shows. After the death of RBG and as a way to honor her and all the women who have fought to have a voice at the table, I added new guardians to my shop with beaded collars. The response has been amazing and I have had the privilege of creating pieces for women all across the country. It is fun to imagine my work hanging on walls across the country and I hope that the guardians are bringing the viewers joy and strength. My Etsy shop has become my replacement for shows during Covid and it is an easy platform to view and purchase the guardians. If you have any questions please send me a message. I love to hear from you. I am a mixed media assemblage artist creating public art installations, murals and guardians. My full portfolio is at: www. crowriverstudio.com

I started making the Guardians after the terrorist attacks on September 11th. At the time I owned a successful jewelry design business and traveled to trade shows and galleries all over the country. After the attacks I began making the Guardians, assemblage art sculptures, created out of recycled materials. They were small and fit in the top of a Christmas stocking. I made them with my son to give to family members for Christmas. We created them as symbols of love and hope. Friends saw them and soon I was making more Guardians than jewelry. They started out small, around six inches and have grown too over 8 feet. They are displayed on the walls of public buildings; courthouses, ski lodges, hospitals, schools and private collections and are symbols of hope and inspiration.

When Covid hit this winter I was scheduled for nine shows across the country and was also planning to teach art in the public schools, instruct art for adult workshops and to create a history wall for a local business. More information about my history walls can be seen on my website: www.crowriverstuido.com.
My travel and teaching plans came to a halt. I was sheltering in place and thought that I would love to get the Guardians out in the world as a symbol of hope. It seems to have come full circle to be creating them during the Covid-19 pandemic. I hope that they bring a smile to your face and that they offer some light in the darkness. I will continue to post new pieces as I create them. I wish peace and good health to each and every one of you. Be well, Mary

Each Guardian is thematic and comes with a story. My hope is that they will bring joy to the viewer and are a symbol of hope, peace and goodwill.

The Guardians rose out of the ashes of September 11th. I had a jewelry design business at the time but wanted to do something to help. I gave to the relief effort in New York and for Christmas, I created small angels, out of reclaimed materials, and tucked them into the top of Christmas stockings. That year, 2001, the Guardians were born.

Each is vested with a special power and has a story attached on a hang tag. Apparently the world needs guardians. Twenty years later I have made thousands. They hang in public spaces, galleries, museums and in private homes.

Each is one-of-a-kind and designed out of found objects that I alter. They range in size from 6 inches to 8 feet. I have created series that hang in hospitals, Auditoriums, places of healing, as well as, public buildings and schools.

My materials are all reclaimed. The things we all throw away. I use recycled metal, wood, game pieces, silverware, hardware, beads, found objects. I alter the pieces using collage, paint, wire, fabric and beadwork. Many of the wings are cut from metal from rusting turbine blades that I found in the Columbia Gorge area. We packed them out and they we're given a new life in my artwork. The head dresses are reclaimed wicks from a lighting company from the 1940's.

Thank you for looking. My full portfolio is on my website: www.crowriverstudio.com

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalized orders

I am happy to design custom Guardians that are special and personal for you to keep or give as a gift. They are a great way to celebrate a special occasion or to mark a stage in life's journey. Personal items can be used to make them even more significant but if my work contains pieces that I have been asked to incorporate, the sale is final. I will send you pictures of the finished piece prior to shipping.

Sizing details

Each piece is one-of-a-kind. My work ranges in size from 6" to 8'. I can work within a specific size and color range for a custom piece. Just let me know what you are looking for. An order example: I'd like to order a red and black kitchen guardian that will fit on a skinny wall. The piece needs to be about 5" wide by 12" long. My budget is 185.00. Please include the word "EAT" on it and a cheese grater.

Care instructions

The Guardians are sealed but can't be in direct sunlight or outside in the elements. They prefer to live inside. Outside, they need to be protected from wind, rain, sunshine.

Wholesale availability

Wholesale orders are welcome. There is a minimum of 12 pieces to complete a wholesale order. Please contact me directly to discuss terms.
